Intake/Carb Suggestions

I just got done rebuilding my engine recently...306 with the e303 cam and stock 1985 heads...I got the Edelbrock 7121 Performer RPM intake and ordered the 1405 Carb...my question is do I have to use the manual choke Carb or can I use the 1406? Are the 1405 or 1406 carbs bolt on ready? I did some searching and found some useful info but thought I would get some "expert" suggestions because this is my first build and wanna do it right the first time...I am saving for a nice set of heads and I know the stock heads are killing me but they will have to do for now...thanks for any and all info.

Good intake and the cam will be a higher RPM one too.
I used a Holley vac. secondary carb w/electric choke on my other stang the first time. Yes, the stock heads will hurt performance, but it still will beat some vette powered Camaros and be fun if you have a manual or a loose convertor. If not, you Will want some low end back. Use Rhodes lifters and have a wider torque band. I did not have noise and had lots of vac. with them. 25 mpg highway too.

I saw you had a manual, but added the convertor comment for other 4 eyed owners.
The carb looks like a manual choke, right? So that cable will need run. I also doubt the fuel line will just line up. I got a dual snorkle air cleaner and the cold air intake parts off of an 83 to 85 GT (probably the same year as yours) and it worked great. The single snorkle breather choked it.

Unless you have solenoids hooked up to a computer on the stock carb, I do not see there being big problems using the Edelb. carb.

I'd still want an electric choke. I'd be surprised if you can not add it later like Holley lets you. The Edel. design should allow for good secondary opening adjustment to kill bog off the line and still have good acceleration. You can fine tune the mixture later, but it should be close enough for jazz out of the box and 600 cfm is a good size for a hopped up 302.

Did you have any work done to those heads? Did you install a good set of pistons with valve relief's in them? If so get rid of those E5 heads. Stock E7 heads off a 87-93 mustang are better then those E5's. There are a lot of bargins to be found on heads that will make you so much happier then the E5's will.

My second build of the carburated 1979 302 was caused by a spun bearing. At least I was told so, it may have been an oil pump shaft. But it ruined the cam bearing surfaces and more. I went with a stock Marshall rebuilt E7 motor, (I was starting a new job and
HAD to have a car), with stock E7 heads. The stock cam and newer heads equaled out the zip of the old set up with 79 heads and an E cam.

BUT compared to the 79, my 1991's seriously ported E7 heads really haul hatch with an E cam and EFI. Porting has made a world of difference in E7 heads. And GT 40s are still supposed to be better.
I am also saving for real performance heads and Rhodes lifters to tame the cam at low RPM and scream up high. Yes, I want it all.
