Does anyone have any suggestions for bolts to use on a 65' 289 intake manifold? so far ive used grade 5 and grade 8 bolts breaking the 5 at the head and the 8 about an inch down from the head . What am i doing wrong?

You're torqing them too tight. Max torque is only 20 ft/lbs.

How is the manifold not breaking or the head holes not stripping out?

That's with an iron intake. I never exceed 20 ft/lbs with either iron or aluminum on a small block. 20 is plenty.

edelbrock and weiand both use ford torque specs for their intakes.

All of the aluminum intakes I've seen instructions for use a lower toque value then the cast iron equivalents.

You should be using grade 8 bolts.

One thing no one has mentioned is that you need to tighten the manifold down using the proper torquing order AND you need to torque them in stages. You can't just run each bolt all the way down to spec and have the intake seal right or have any of the bolts except the last bolt you torque have correct torque values.

When I do em, I snug each one hand tight, then go to 15 ft/lbs then 20, then redo all about 5 times till the gaskets settle. The end bolts are the most easily broken or stripped (but I've never doen either )

How do you get the bolts out if you break the head/stud off about 1" down? Just did this wonderful thing and need some ideas for getting it out...

For starters try using an impact with Liquid Wrench to remove bolts. This can help reduce the snaped off bolt problem.

Once one is broken off you have to take off what ever is in the way of geting to it. Did you brake a head bolt or intake bolt. From your post it sounds like a head bolt. Is it a bolt or a stud ?

I broke an intake bolt, I have to pull the intake yet to see just how much stud is left over to play with here.

No matter what you do or what this looks like, DO NOT USE AN EASY OUT. This will only cause you pain, missery and heart ache. Just drill out the remaining bolt if there isn't enough sticking up to put vice grips on it and turn it out. Also, spray the hell out of it twice a day with liquid wrench for the next few days. Thats Liquid Wrench, not PB Blaster. PB Blaster is OK but it is literally only 1/2 as good as Liquid Wrench.

Just a guess, is it the intake bolt right next to the water neck ?

If you have to drill the thing out, just drill it carefully. Grind the shank flat if you can and ALWAYS center punch the shank to give your drill bit somewhere to start. Start with a smaller drill bit and then move to a larger size, don't hop up 1 size at a time as this will destroy your drill bits and is not neccessary. After you get the bolt shank you heli-coil the hole in the head and everything will be ok.

Yes, I've had to do this before.... again DO NOT USE AN EASY OUT unles of course you want to spend 2 days drilling through the hardened steel of the easy out with carbide drill bits and cuting oil.

Don't overlook the bolt length before you use it.
Breaking bolts happen when it bottoms out and you eather strip the threads or break it.
Simple but mistakes made most often are.

I ended up throwing a nut on it, tack welding it and it came out by hand, I am certain the heat did the most help there but either way it's out. All 12 of the intake bolts are the same length right? Thanks guys!

Well done there sir. I don't have a welder and I know most people don't so I don't mention that solution. I provably still wouldn't have mentioned it unless you came back and said there was a good amount sticking out and I knew you had a welder. Good job geting it out and have fun with your project.

Thanks for the kind words, would any of you happen to know of a common store nation wide that would carry these bolts by chance? I can't seem to find anyone that has a 2" long 5/16" with threads the entire length instead of half thread, half shank.. Let alone grade 8 haha. I am going to try and replace them all.

That's actually a common bolt size. Mcmaster-Carr has them and Fastenal would too. Fastenal has two locations in Wichita, not sure if they're distributors or retail, though. They both do online ordering.
