Intake swap, ideas for draining coolant?

I'm working outside, and i'm trying to not make a coolant mess both on the ground and down inside my engine like every other time i swap intakes. I'm trying to think of ways to drain the coolant from the intake before i unbolt it. I know a shop vac would work but i don't have one. I was thinking about dropping the lower hose off the water pump so the pump isn't sucking more coolant, and then pulling the upper to let it drain into a bucket and then start the car for a second, but would that push the coolant through the engine without water being pulled through the pump? I'm thinking no..

How else could i do this?

I ended up just pulling the t-stat housing loose and letting it drain and delt with the mess. That was enough that i only got a few drops in the lifter valley, which was my main concern.
