considering my car only has an o/r h pip, cat back, cai as mods to my "breathing" mods, is it worth it to get an upper and lower intake (specifically gt-40) without having heads, cam TB or MAF?? if you could tell me a power and TQ increase or track time improvements on my 94 5.0 vert with 2.73 rear gears?...thanks

it won't hurt but gears would be real nice too.
if you found a good deal then go for it but if your just looking to get something, get some gears.

Unless it's a good deal go with the gears. With the auto you will get alot more out of the gears.

Get the gears 3.73's better yet 4.10's you'll get more from that than a new intake.

if you are going turbo or supercharger, stay with the gears you have and get the intake.

if you are staying n/a, then gears will make a more noticeable difference. the intake should be next on the list tho.

Gears would be the ticket for that extra something your looking for, and yes it is worth it for an intake on stock everything.

Those gears will not be good enough unless he decides to make some ungodly power. A good poweradder gear if you have around 600hp is 3.27. 2.73:1 is a huge difference.

Do your gears first, then get your intake unless you're getting a nice intake for 200 or something...

gears first intake second
the only reason I bought mine first was because I had the money to buy the whole h/c/i at once

I agree with the rest the gears should be first. But When I installed only a ported stock lower I felt a noticable power increase in the upper RPM's. Still no track times after the install so I cant tell you what it was good for. But I would guess about 2-3 tenths.

On a related note:

What really are the gains people see from a performance intake manifold installed on a stock 5.0L?

Next year I'm planning on doing the heads/cam/intake thing...however, my budget for this year would allow me to buy a Trick Flow Street Heat intake manifold, an Edelbrock 65mm throttle body, and some 1.7 roller rockers. Would these basic modifications create any significant power gains?

Swapping the intake manifold is not the easiest thing in the world, and I wouldn't do it without heads/cam unless it would gain significant power.

how you know it's an auto?.. it IS, but i might very well be swapping to the T-5... thats the only reason im not putting gears in yet, if i get the 5 spd, ill get 3.73's and if that doesnt work out, i guess 4.10's...just not yet though

I forget what exactly the poster's question was about gears. So, hold on a sec, I need to scroll back up to remind myself.

...

OK, I would say definitely do the intake. It will be worth it, but only if it comes with gears!

I know you don't wanna hear this but......it depends on your selection of intake. A stocker ported by T Moss or a Cobra would give a better gain than most of popular bolt ons like pulleys, mafs, tb, etc. with E7's.

However if you really are going with h/c/i then a wise thing to do is pick the parts that will work together well for your long range goal. With that said, you can see that those two manifolds might not be the best choice.

If you are gonna go with something besides iron Ford heads I'd blow off the 1.7 ped rr's and go with stud mount rr's when you get your heads and another thing is that most cams are cut for a 1.6 ratio anyway.

The 65 tb might be too small for your combo and until you get your heads it wouldn't give you any gain to speak about anyway so, I see the tb as a part just like the 1.7 rr's as something that might not be the best thing for your long term goal.

Swapping the intake manifold is not the easiest thing in the world, and I wouldn't do it without heads/cam unless it would gain significant power.

It really is not that bad imho. Now I would not upgrade heads & intake without doing the cam at the same time. I don't know what you think is significnat but an intake could give 15rwhp give or take a few.

Thanks for the feedback Grady...15 RWHP ain't too shabby.

I plan on going with Trick Flowheads and a matching Trick Flow cam. I guess I should have posted that the specific intake I'm considering installing now is of course the Trick Flow Street Heat. This intake will be installed eventually; this year by itself or next year with the heads/cam.

My goals are as follows: 12s this year with my nitrous, gears, exhaust, and bolt-ons combo. My car has also been on a serious diet. This should be attainable, as my first time at the track netted a 13.34 with several ****ups driving wise on my part. 11s next year with TFS heads, cam, intake, 30lb injectors, throttle body, stall, and the same old 125 shot.

I'll consider the intake manifold only for this year based on your suggestions.
