It seems the guy that tried to restore the car before me, used a driver side door from another 65 mustang, then sanded down the warrenty plate making it almost impossible to read. I can tell that this isn't the correct plate because the VIN number on the plate doesn't match the VIN stamped on the car. Is there a way to get a new warrenty plate that would match what this car should be? Is it even possible to be sure what color code, trim code, etc. this car should be by just using the VIN number?

Marti can print one for you if you know the exact options on your car or original plate numbers

i know they are available not sure who has them, the color code should not be to hard to figure out find a spot of origional paint ,possibly in the upper trunk? the vin # on the fender approns will give you the plant the first two didgets will give the year and plant 5R would be 65 san jose plant .interior code should be fairly easy if it still has orrigional color interior, motor code is in the vin as well 5th didgit
C,A ,or K would be 289 ,C would be 289 2 v ,A would be 289 4 v ,and K that would be what every one is wanting HIpo, dso or district sales office would be a little harder to figure out. trans. shouldnt be to hard to figure and rear end ,check the code tag on the third member
it will give the ratio and the size 8 or 9 inch should be apparent

I'm just concerned that if the door isn't stock, and the rest of this car is the definition of failed restoration, who knows if the black interior is what it was ment to be, let alone matching engine and trans numbers. It's blue, but has a red undercoat, and both have overspray and underspray, so I don't think that's the original color.

What I was mainly looking for, is if you could send Ford or another company the VIN number and have them be able to tell me what it was ordered with then be able to get a new warrenty plate to match that.

You can get a Marti report for mustangs but they dont have records available for cars older than 1967.

Is there any chance you have a build sheet. I think the typical locations are under the dash wired to the harness by the steering tube, under the carpet or front drivers seat or in a door panel. Other guys will be able to more accurately describe the locations.

You can't get a Marti report, however if you know the options the car came with and VIN number, you should be able to get a door tag printed. martiauto.com/tags.cfm

No. Ford destroyed this data for the 64-66 Mustang (and all other cars) in 1979. Which was just about time people wanted to know it. Idiots. The whole mess would probably fit in one van.

You'll have to examine the car closely for interior and exterior color, as well as other options. The VIN will yield the approximate date, but you'll have to flat-out guess on the DSO.

Be careful with the replacement plate. I have seen a lot of them that used totally the wrong font (lettering size and style). The practiced eye can spot the bad ones 10 feet away. Glazier/Nolan can provide correct plates.
