Introduction and Quistions.

OK, let me introduce myself, I go by Jarred Darque, I am 23 years old, x-military (chAir Farce), and currently a college student majoring in mechanical engineering. I own three Fords at the moment, 2 broke, one running. I have, shamefully, also owned 2 GM's in the past, 1 chevy, 1 olds. But that is in the past. I will not be on here often, normally when I have something I need to figure out, which will not be often as quite frankly, I am broke most of the time. :) (I am taking donations to the Fix Jarred's Car Fund)

Anyways, out of the 3 currently owned Fords, one is a mustang. A 1971 Mach 1 to be exact, with a 351C, C6 tranny, PS, PB, AC, AM/FM Tape, and I think that is about it on the list. I do not have the original order or build sheet, but do have a copyof the build sheet somewheres. The car is bright red (I think it was called bright red at the time) but is really primer grey. The car was not ordered with front or rear spoilers, or the nifty Mag wheels, or power locks/windows, which I plant to change all of that over the course of however long this rebuild will take me.

I have had the car for over 3 years now, I rebuilt the engine within the first few months, but have had to leave the car since, having only seen it twice in the last 2 years. Tranny is also rebuilt. The car is in about a million pieces, and still has more to be disassembled. There are certain hard to find parts I will have to find to finish this car, but I have within close proximity 3 mustang specific junkyards to find parts I can't order new.

I plan on doing a COMPLETE restoration, taking car down to the uni-body and having it glass blasted (unless someone can suggest an even more effective method) and building on it from there. I also plan on doing some modifications along the way, like adding in options that where not on the car to begin with and upping the performance, both in a straight line like the cars where designed for, and increasing its ability to handle real turns (I know, a hard feat for these behemoths).

Anyways, first two quistions, the engine has been sitting for almost 3 years now without ever being turned over, and the tranny has been sitting after its rebuild for even longer (I did not rebuild the tranny, it was done before I bought car, but I know the ship that did it and they do good work). Can I count on the engine turning over or does it need to come back apart? If need be, I can try and get it set up to start in a few months and turn it over once in a while (Is it crank a motor up while on an engine stand) What preps do I need to do, such as pre-oiling, and how?
Second one, I should start getting back to the car soon, and the first step is going to be to completely disassemble it, and get done what body work needs to be done to prep before painting. There is very little rust on the cars body, most of it has been removed, and I have had some excellent patch work done on the quarters, there are some iffy spots elsewhere on the car I will have the pleasure of paying someone else to fix. Anyways, after the body is done, many moons and many dollars from now, I need to put the car back together. But I haven't a clue how to do that,

so where do I find an instruction manuel basically for building a 71 mustang ground up, you know, do this, do that, bolt this on, install that kinda thing. I need this while I am doing body work so I can go through all the parts to see what needs to be replaced, and ask quistions on what can/should be upgraded.

Anyways, sorry it is long, I can be long winded when it is 345am and I cant sleep. :bang:

Oh, and if anyone has any good pics of a 71 red mach 1 with mags, front/rear spoilers that looks great, I would like one to put on the background to my comp, right now it has a pic of a 71 black boss 351

And also, I am wondering if anyone can inform me as to what came standard on this car, i.e. PS, PB, gear ratio, etc. etc.

Jarred. Welcome.

You can pick up an OK early model Mustang manual from most any of the chain auto parts stores. You got a lot of questions there so start with the "SEARCH" function here at StangNet and then put up specific questions as needed.

Good Luck with the project and Happy Motoring.

Welcome.

Get a shop manual for your year car from a Mustang parts vendor.

Engine: squirt oil in the cyl bores, change oil and filter, and spool up your oil pressure with a drill on the pump driveshaft...you should be fine.

Oh, and use the search feature ;)
