IRAQI Vet with a Q?

This Iraqi vet about to return home after a year in the desert. Prior to leaving we had to place our cars in an large outside lot with a roof to protect them from sun damage. Is there anything I we should do prior to starting them back up? Since everyone also deployed with me we had no one to start them every couple of weeks. Will there be any damage to the motors after sitting for a year? Any help is definitely appreciated by all of us. Thanks

from working in the car biz for awhile, i have seen cars just fall apart from sitting. i dont know what to tell you to do but i hope that everything is ok

1. Thanks for your efforts in the war!

I'd do an oil change prior to starting it up. Ensure that you put some of the new oil into the new filter prior to screwing it on. Then, be prepared to have jumper cables with you in case you need a boost. If it sat on those tires for a year, probably would be a good idea to go very slow your first miles to get any flat sports out of them.

Did you get to put any kind of fuel treatment before you left? I am not sure what you might need if you didn't. Might get luck with just some injector cleanor added to the tank.

Battery might be dead... Jumpers or a new battery may be needed...

I wonder if you can disconnect a wire from the ignition so it wont fire up right away. Maybe you could turn it over for a little bit to get some oil flowing, then hook it back up and start it. I am not sure if you can get up enough oil pressure from turgning it over with the starter or not.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing about pulling a wire, but dont know which one. Anyone know how to do this? I think if this can be done, I can turn it over for a bit just to get the oil moving. I plan on changing the oil immediately. Do you think it needs a tune up too just to be sure?

Last year I picked up a 78 Cobra II that hadn't been driven (wouldn't start) in 15 years. After hotwiring the nuetral safety (reason it wouldn't crank) and changing all the fluids I removed the spark plugs so it would crank easier and turned it over until it built-up oil pressure. I then put in new plugs and she fired right up with just a little gas dumped in the carb to prime things. Oh yeah I got it for $500 with only 41K miles from the original owner.

I had to do the same thing during the first Gulf War. If I remember correctly, We had to have the gas tanks at 1/4 tank, and the battery disconnected.

I had my fuel filter changed, gas tank drained and I needed a jump. Later, I had the chasis lubed and took it easy on the tires.

yep injector cleaner change fuel filter aftrer injector cleaner and possible drain tank. I would also change te oil ASAP. It is all up to you on how far you want to go. I would personally do all three of those. In fact I did all three of those after spending a year in Korea

As for the cranking the car without having it turn on idea, you could just unplug the connectors at each fuel injector. I think that would work.

If you want to turn te motor over without it turning on all you have to do is unplug them main harnesson the passanger side on the firewall. There is a bolt holding the wire harness down you can't miss it. It is what I unplug on mustangs when I do a compresion check.

The key thing is the vital fluids.

1. Prime the engine with oil prior to starting.
2. Drink beer.
3. Dump some injector cleaner in the tank.
4. Drink beer.
5. Change the oil.
6. Drink beer.
7. Ejaculate.
8. Drink beer.

Just don't drink and drive, not even a little. You've been through too much shyt to screw up now!

Check the water, it has probably evaporated. pull a fuse to keep it from starting and turn it over for 10 seconds.( I don't remember which one but will look and post if needed) replace and crank. make sure the oil pressure comes up. I would let it sit and warm up before driving, then take it easy for a mile or two. Check the oil before cranking. I would fill the tank with fresh fuel. The brakes will be slightly rusted, but will be fine after you drive a little. Change the oil and check all fluids soon.

Hey everyone thanks for all the info. I am going to do the oil-fuel-and charge the bat for a bit and run it awhile to get it warmed. Hopefully I wont have any problems down the road for sittin so long. I also plan on asking alot more questions in the future about mods. Since I bought the car new, in 02 only got to drive it for 4 months before heading out to the desert. Have a safe New Year everyone, glad to be back home to the greatest country on earth!
