is 26x10 ET Drag too much tire for my combo?

currently i'm running 27x10.5 ET Streets, but i want a better 60's. My best is a 1.78, but it's not very consistant at all. I cross the line ~5500 rpm according to the factory tach which may be off a little. I'm thinking of getting ET Drags and i have a friend selling 26x10.5's. Do you think they are too wide, providing too much traction and rotating mass for my combo? If they provide too much traction, could i just run them at a higher psi, maybe 15lbs?

any comments are welcome

Your RPM will go up by about 200 RPM with the shorter tires.
They shouldn't be too wide for your setup. You have plenty of rear gear to get them going.
You are right. You can adjust the traction with more air pressure if need be.

I would go with 26 x 8 Et drags which are the same width as the 27 x 10.5 Et streets.
With the 4.30's, true drag tire, and suspension mods, I don't see why it wouldn't go 1.6x 60's.

I have 26x9 Hoosiers, and have pulled a couple of 1.69 60's on an untouched suspension. I would say a slick will hook just as good as a wider ET Street!

are those hoosiers full slicks? i know my 1.78 isn't too bad, but it's just not good enough for me. to this day, i don't see how the hell you guys are pulling those kinds of short times. but, i hope i can get closer.

Yes slicks, on ET Streets the car was doing low 1.8s, and usually in the mid to high 1.7s on slicks, but for some reason it pulled a couple of 1.69s the other day. Look at my avatar for pics of the tires hooking on a 1.699 60'!

Lets not blame the tires. Do you have to shift before the 60 foot mark? If you do that could be your problem.

If not, your 60' depends on how you stage. If you stage deeper your sixty foot will go down. If you stage a little more shallow, your 60 foot will go up. An inch or so will make up that .01 of a second.

Drag racing is tough. You can win or lose a race in less than 14 seconds.

i honestly don't know if i'm shifting before the 60' marker. but i do have two crappy videos of the car, and it looks like i'm shifting right at it which you're right, could be affecting my 60'. so, maybe i actually would be low 1.7 if i didn't have to shift.

i always stage deep (i think). i prestage, then pull up just enough to turn on the bottom light.

i know drag racing is tough. i think some people don't realize that.

Drag racing is easy, you mash the gas and go straight. NOT.

Shifting before the 60' will kill you. A taller tire will fix that, but there is a good chance that you will slow down out the hole.

Dont feel so bad, I usually run a 1.7 60' on a 11.6x pass. I have mid 12 second cars beat me to the 60foot mark durning time trials.

Here is the car on that pass, and as you can see pretty bad weight transfer, and as I said it usually is in the mid to high 1.7s (launching higher)... If you are shifting at the 60' that might explain the inconsistency, and might not be a bad thing... My suggestion is get a set of tires to borrow for a few passes, and see what works. Might be tough but will save money if they dont work!

I shift before the 60' markers and pull down low 1.7's (1.69 once, usually 1.70's) on 26x10.5-15 et streets... stock original suspension, stock motor.

A friend shifted before the 60' marker, and was cutting high 1.3's.

swapping tires so you don't have to shift in the 60' is not the answer, getting a good clean crisp shift is where you need to work.
Then, all you've done is make your 60'-330' interval longer because you've moved a shift out of the 60'.

With 4.30's, 27" tire, and stock heads, you are in all likelyhood already shifting in the 60'...

i'm not thinking of changing tires so i shift after the 60'. i am thinking of changing to an ET Drag for the added traction and consistancy. either, i'm not very consistant with the ET Streets, or i'm shifting at or before the 60'.

9.5-11.25psi in the tires depending on track conditions.
6psi in the air bag.
roll tires over i nthe water box, then pull out into the damp area.
2nd gear, 5000rpm watch for signs of smoke and then count one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, let off the brake, roll ahead a couple of feet, off the gas and clutch in... I don't drive out waiting for hook, I shut it down while still spinning.
Roll to the line.
depending on track conditions, I hold 4800-5500rpm.
when the second yellow is fully out, I floor the gas, and when the last yellow is fully bright, I'm gone.
shift 1-2 at 5600.

I am considering the same thing.
Typically, it takes a couple of runs(sometimes more), and a lot of guess work/talking/watching to get the car to go 1.70's... usually start out with 1.72's - 1.73's, and work down... to 1.70's by mid day... and I hear, with our hp and real slicks, it's the same formula every time to the line for nice consistant 60's.

actually, i've never really tried below 11 psi. also, i usually just spin the tires until i see a some smoke and then let off the brake. i'll try your counting method, that should heat them up a little more. i never really shut down while still spinning either, they always chirp a little. i'll have to try not doing that too.

how much of a difference did you notice with the addition of the air bag?

Air bag, funny...
That was an attempt to control shock compression/rebound, on wore out original stock shocks.
Without it, the car would hook, rebound, and break loose... with the bag, it still rebounds and looks like a circus ride, but, controls it enough to stay hooked up.
Went from bests of low 1.7's (like, 1.72-1.73, when it'd not unload and spin to a high 1.7) to 1.70's-1.71's pretty consistant.
I have new in the box Lakewood 50/50's that I'll thro on before it goes to the track again. I hope that'll be enough to put it solidly in the high 1.6's. With the stock shocks, it's loosing some time compressing rebounding, and there is a lot of movement up/down in the rear on the 1-2 shift... nose stays up, but the trunk slams down on the 1-2... gotta be eating energy... With the 50/50's, I'm not sure if I'll need the air bag... dunno... we'll see.

without littlerally counting, I was spinning out of the hole too far on launch. I still turn them over, but maybe only 5-6 feet... just enough to keep the stock motor from bogging.

driving out of the burnout and letting it hook up and chirp was putting too much heat in the clutch. It made the 1-2 shift difficult/inconsistant, and as a result very deliberate and of course slow.

I mention'd above...

I think making a consious(sp?) effort to floor the gas prior letting the clutch out was the biggest thing holding back my 60'. Flywheel momentum... dunno?

These are things that have worked for me.
Hopefully, they'll not hinder you. .

I found out the hard way a huge burnout does nothing but waste tires. I was doing huge ones a while back (I will post a vid) and cutting mid to high 1.7s thinking it was good. Then last event I did normal burnout, and instead of going all out with the RPM on the launch, I brought to 5200 or so and bang the car hooked to the 1.69s.

i already have that video. the one with the killer bees in the background. that's definatly alot longer of a burnout than i usually do. i plan on doing it like that my next time out, which is going to be at the SSOTN Nats on Nov. 13th.

I run 275/50 bfg dr's.

Other than mac upper/lower control arms my rear suspension is original. On my only 2 passes ever with anything other than street tires the car cut a 1.77 and a 1.68 60' with a 3k launch at 15psi Maybe thats a hp issue though
