I was having a grinding noise coming from my alternator after installing a new belt. I was looking around when i noticed the alternator's pulley slowly moves horizontally like its engaging and disengaging. When it moves out towards the fan a horrible grinding noise comes from it.......whats wrong with it? Its the stock pulley...is it just loose?

The main alternator shaft is pressed into the housing. It sounds to me like it has moved. I would try to bring it to a local alternator shop and see if they can press it in properly. Or if you feel ok with trying it yourself then give it a whirl.

I would not trust it either. I got my 130 amp alternator from Autozone for $109 with a lifetime warranty.

I got a paperformance alternator when mine went bad...with the 4g wire upgrade kit...it was around $250 bucks though but well worth it to me...

I say drive your car if that is all you got...belts are cheap...just keep your "spirited driving" down until you get it resolved...

Just be easy on it...that isn't to hard is it

Good Luck
