Is it possible??? (possibly genius idea)

hook up your e-brake so it does the front so have instant LINE LOCK!! It's like many of us need the e-brake. I wouldn't ever use it except do whip a 180 in a rental car or try to mash the brakes and ebrake from 65-70 mph and put bald patches on someones tires. Done it on my DD before. Stops fast but then you get terrible noise from flat patches.

ANYWAY, is it possible to do and can anyone explain exactly how the ebrake works and why or why not for it being possible. Thanks

It wouldn't work. there are no provisions on the front calipers for a mechanical braking action. The e-brake handle is hooked up to a cable which is then hooked to the rear drums and "mechanically" presses the shoes against the drum. The same goes for rear discs. If you look at a rear brake caliper you'll see a large spring. The cable hooks onto that spring which compresses the piston/pads against the rotor.

The only way to correctly do what you want to do is to buy an acutal line lock kit or just do brake stands if you want to do burnouts.

it is possible, you would have to fabricate a lot of stuff, but why do it when a line lock is cheaper and easier to install?

that would be way to easy, i would try moding an 8.8 axel in the front, so you can have all wheel drive.

I am sure some aftermarket company makes a twin piston caliper for the rear brakes, with provisions for Ebrake cables. Get a pair of these then fab the mounting brackets needed for the front and get some custom cables.

I think the hard part would be finding calipers that were large enough for the front of our heavy cars, that have the e brake provisions.

I am sure it could be done, but line lock may be cheaper?

alot of your older subarus like the loyale have the e-brake hooked to the front wheels.i don't know if it didn't work very well or what but subaru later changed to the rear e-brake setup in the mid 90s.

I actually thought it to be an interesting question. Congrats on breaking free from the "aftermarket part mod" "cookie cutter performance" way of thinking. Original thoughts are very cool.

One other potential downside is that ebrakes tend to distort the rear rotor because the brake is applied when the rear rotors are still hot. This prevents the rotors from cooling evenly and they warp. Not such a bad thing in the rear, but if this happened in the front rotors it would be more noticeable.

I think spending time on something like that would just scream 'hokey'. If it even worked worth a damn. If not, that'd be even worse. Line locks aren't expensive or tough to put in. Kinda pointless to do though if you don't have a real need for it, but that's just MHO. I know everyone likes to have toys to play with

What if... No one ever questioned the status quo - We would be lucky to be driving Flat head V8s in our Mustangs, with 4 wheel drums.

We are the recipients of a fair amount of technology in the Mustang (especially in the '05) and it is due to creative thinking.

Sorry if this feels like a rant, just my opinion.

I would like to see more threads with this type of question.
