is my a4ld sorta messed up or it suppoed to do this?

My car runs real solid, but the trans does this thing.

ok say if i drive like regular neighborhood or city driving, going pretty slow from the start my trans shifts at like 2500 or so.

If i start from a stop a little faster, it wont shift until like 3-4000.

And if i punch it from a stop it will go really high. I never kept the pedal down past 4500-5000, dont want to redline on accident, i dont know if will shift up there or not.

Are the a4lds made like this or is it old and screwed up and slips alot?

Also here is a question, not really lated to the trans.
If i floor it on the stang, not using alot of foot pressure, it wont really kick in and drive quicker. but if a really put force on the pedal it starts kicking in.

Say if i'm going like 45mph and it push the pedal all the way in( not like all my force on it) it wont really raise the rpms like 2-500. But if a push real hard with my foot. It w start going fast.

Any help?

Mine would shift automatically at 4500-5000 with the pedal on the floor. If your doesn't shift by a little after 5000, there is probably something a little out of adjustment. No big deal though.

You are talking about the kickdown cable. The point in the pedal where the kickdown cable is engauged is adjustable, and it sounds like yours is a little out of adjustment. You can adjust it under the hood on the throttle linkages. There is a black cable going from the throttle linkage to the transmission. When the pedal is pushed all the way, it should move. You pull up on the clip, and then you can adjust it.

Hey Buff I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but what about the Valccum regulater deal? I had a small problem with mine awhile back but it didn't give me this much grief.

Just a thought on top of the kick down cable.

Sounds like it's working normal to me...

Don't you think if you floor it and try to "haul ass" the trans is going to wait until a higher rpm to shift?

thats what i was going to say stinger...i mean it all depends how much throttle your giving it...you dont expect it to shift at 2000 with your foot all the way down would you? that wouldnt make it a fun car to drive...

i have the same problem with throttle response too though...barely let into it and it starts losing mph...strange...ill take your guys's advice

My convert did the same thing. It is pretty much normal. The only way to fix that problem is to replace it with a T5

it's probably more the motor than the tranny. That's what happens when you only have 88hp.

I have a 93 Auto Mine does the exact same thing, this is perfectly normal. When i get on the expressway at night, I will hit about 5500 before it shifts. Dont worry about it, just save money for the T-5 swap.

I'd say to try putting a new vacuum modulator on it at least. They only cost about $10, they take 5 minutes to replace, and are a good maintance item if you've never replaced it before. I was having shifting issues with my A4LD and a new modulator made it good as new.
