How do I know if my dashpot is working properly. I installed a rebuilt Autolite. Drove my 68 from Pa to SC...no problems except one episode of sputtering but I was low on gas so I figured that was it. Filled it up, drove back to Pa and now the problem has returned with a vengeance. Looking at other threads led me to the dashpot. It plunger (which I assume is suppose to spring back into place remains in the same position. What are the specs for setting it and how can I tell if it is working properly?

Easy- With the air cleaner removed, open the throttle and let go. The throttle will drop to the dashpot, then slowly for the next few seconds the throttle will compress the dashpot to get to the idle position. If it doesn't compress slowly, or the opposit, doesn't compress at all, it is no good. I have seen some "exact repro" dashpots that look perfect, but are hard as a rock and don't compress. They can fail when they get old, too.
