Is pinging a concern?

Like bierbelly said..these engines are high hp and tq engines and will not run on cheap 87 octane. I would NEVER use anything below 89 in a stock stang. That is what the manual recommends. Of course when you have a power adder or advanced timing then increase your octane to 91-93 or higher. Don't take the risk of detonation. The more money you'll pay on a new car or an engine rebuild will far outweigh the few extra dollars for the gas.

Yup, and the cylinder gets hot because air gets hotter and hotter as you increase compression. That's why higher compression / performance engines require premium fuel

Until i started to mod the car, i used 87 octane and the engine never ping. If you dont have any mod, your engine souldnt ping when running with 87 octane fuel. If it does, theres a problem and putting higher octane fuel in it is not the solution, it only hide it.

I get some pinging when I get on it in the heat with the a/c on (it was 90 degrees last week here)
Is this a concern? How can it be fixed? I use 87 oct. Stock GT

Out of curiosity, were you flooring it hard in 5th gear when you heard it instead of downshifting?

I was just worried that Ford used to recommend 89, but then dropped it to 87 for no good reason...

I use 87 with an occasional tank of 89. Also, it seems that Chevron gas always works well at 87, but I'm sure that's all in my head ("Aye, and be sure to fill 'er up with Chevron...it's got Techron!" -Groundskeeper Willie)

I bet you just didnt get in a situation where detonation can occur. I understand that low grade gas can cause it, but I don't see how something can be wrong with my engine. What could possibly cause it besides bad gas?

Deposits in the cylinder can cause it, they're called "hot spots" because they hold heat longer than the rest of the cylinder and act a bit like the glow plug in a diesel does.

I guess i didnt but i have been doing long trip with lots of stuff in the car running up and down mountains in hot weather and it never happened. Maybe wrong timing setting from factory???
