Is the convertible tack strip necessary?

Hi,folks. I just replaced the top on my '90 LX convertible ( which was a chore, but I'm pretty happy with the results). I've noticed that the 83-90 models have a tack strip going across the rear bow above the window, while the 91 and up models don't. Is there a reason for this? I haven't put mine on yet, and I'm wondering if it serves a function, or if it's just ornamental. The original top was split at the top corners of the rear glass, which I was told was because the previous owners didn't drop the rear window before lowering the top. Is that true too? It's a pain to zip and unzip that rear window every time
I want to drop the top, and I'm thinking maybe the tack strip was removed on 91 and up models to help counteract the rips in the corners. Someone please educate me!
