Is this a lot of timing chain play?

87 5.0 roller out of a Crown Vic. I just pulled the cover and this seems like a lot of play, but I'm no expert. Thoughts?

I wouldn't say the chain is "way too loose", but I would replace it in favor of a double roller timing chain set anyway. Look at the D2AE in the part number. That timing set first came out in 1972. Could that really be stock on an 87 roller out of a crown vic?

Also, it is not uncommon to still find mechanical fuel pump eccentrics in EFI 5.0's.

Look at the date code cast into the sprocket. It's the circle with 86 in the middle. It shows the day, month and year the part was cast. That part was made in 1986

I have a Edelbrock gear drive sitting here, I might just throw that on and wait till it blows up to replace the entire engine.

Ford allowed for a 1/4" of play in the gears.... That said, $30 for a replacement will get you a brand new one.

Well, I didn't say it was made in 1972, that's just when the design came out. But if you knew that already, thanks for the info on how to date those sets.
