My plans are to use AFR 165 heads, holley systemmax intake and the repro blue racer 1087 camshaft on an 89 notch with an AOD. Will the cam be too much for the automatic, should I go with the trickflow package instead, if the 1087 cam is too much what would you recommend for a cam with the automatic any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Don't down grade your power potetial to match the trans. Upgrade the trans to match the power. The AOD can be modded to handle a lot of power, but it's not cheap. Call Lentech or PA for the low down.

It's not going to fold because you add H/C/I. I have no idea about that cam but I hope you have or are planing on gears, shift kit, and a converter. I haven't had any trouble with mine . It was rebuilt by the dealership about 60k ago. If it is in good condition it will last. It also depends on how you drive and maint.

The cam is very, very important in an automatic car, I would suggest a custom grind.

I just finished a car for a customer, 331 10.6:1, AFR 185's upgraded springs, FTI custom cam, RNH Performance ported Typhoon intake, 70mm TB, 75mm MAF, 30# inj. It had a AOD rebuilt by PA, very mild build, A-servo, upgraded valve body, good clutches and bands, PA/PTC Converter, 4:10 gear.

Car runs great and really impressed myself and the owner is very happy

Contact Ed Curtis www.flowtechinduction.com about a cam, best $325 you will ever spend. The Holley is a good piece but really will not match up to the AFR heads very good, a RPM or RPM II would be a better match out of the box.

For a converter you may want to check into Andre @ www.edgeracingconverters.com

What are your plans for the car?

The AODs are definatley the hardier of the 2 factory transmissions. A shift kit ($70, easy to install) and a converter (3K stall) are well recommended. I run a tci streetfighter and I'm happy with it. If you do burn it out, you can rebuild it with kevlar clutches and make it even stronger. One of the weak points is the direct drive shaft but you can get a hardened one for about $150 or lentech makes a strip terminator that elimanates lockup until overdrive (which, we hope, wont be used during a "run") which will work around this problem altogether.

I've seen figures of 600 hp on an aod (not sure what mods that had, but its a lot more than a T-5)

I say slap the motor together and burn out the trans (or not). Then use it as an excuse to take it apart and hardcore rebuild it with kevlar, A+ servo, hardened shaft, lentech valve body, new torque converter.
