Is this just a broken clutch cable...or worse?

My clutch had been feeling notchy and was stretching out, it snapped today. I checked underneath and verified the broken cable. What I could not recall though was whether it was right that the clutch fork swung easily toward the rear of the car. I had not remembered there being any play last time I replaced a cable. It is taunt where it should be toward the front of the car, but swings away toward the rear...is that normal?

I agree with the new components. In the times I've lost a cable (on bikes and cars), I'd get one good pop and some extra freeplay about a day before the cable completely let go.

Good luck.

that's great guys, thanks for the quick feedback...new one on its way, $42 from Summitt. Lucky me, I was fighting it all the way home from work. It snapped as I was trying to shift into first to pull up the driveway. Had to push it 30 feet up hill but it would have been a lot worse.
