Is this ok?

Here is a pic of my rebuilt front drum brakes. If you notice, the right hold down spring is pointed a little off. Is this a problem?

I got a small area of the shoe contiminated with my gloves, can I just sand this off? Does it even matter?

If you bend the pin a little the hold down spring will streighten out and as far as the little bit of oil on the shoe goes, it wont be a problem worth trying to sand the shoe down to solve, it will wear off and wont hurt a thing.

A little brake cleaner and back off the adjustment and you will be fine.

No, but you have bigger problems: the brake shoe anchor guide appears to be missing! This is the piece that goes on the top two springs over the anchor. Also, use a light coating of lithium or similar grease on all pivot points. Not just the anchor, but the adjustor, and behind the shoes where they ride(you will be able to see wear points to lube).

Funny you mention that. I too noticed in my '68 shop manual (the car is a '67) that the brake diagram shows an anchor going across the top side, but this car never had one (both sides). What gives?

Bending brake springs?

I'd be reluctant to bend a brake spring. The springs are proably old and might be crystalized from previous bending. Be sure ALL of the brake hardware components are in their proper place.

Test your self-adjusters PRIOR to installing the drums. Use you finger to actuate the adjusting cable and make sure that the star wheel advances properly.

Now, what about the those top anchor bar/arm? Why am I missing those?

Check your local auto parts store. You can get rebuild kits that have all those springs and stuff in them for really cheap. I think I last got one for my rears that was only like $12 for both sides.
