I have a 2002 gt with the mach 460 sterio system. I am trying to install an aftermarket deck and I can not get the factory amps to turn on. I bought all the right wireing from crutchfield but it doesn't tell me where to connect the plug for the amps to. Has anyone installed an aftermarket deck and was able to use the factory amps?? Thanks for your help

i don't believe you're going to be able to... i had same problem... got so frustrated after spending a whole day.. finally took it to BEST BUY... pain my friend to hook everything for me...
i think it's because the factory unit sends out a 'signal' that actuallyfires up the amps...it won't work otherwise.. at least that what they told me....

Hey guys....

I'm not sure how the 98 and the 99+ wiring is differant. I also have the 460 and installed an aftermarket deck. There are TWO differant wiring harness sets. One will use the amp's and one bypasses them. The one that bypasses them the two pieces look alike except are differant colors (grey, black) The other harness (correct one for amps) has the same grey piece but has a small square black one. This is the one that hooks up to the amp. I did a post a while back about this. I left a model number for the correct harness. I'll see if I can find it. It CAN be done, DON'T pay someone to do it.

see i was told that a pre 99 is different and its a different type of sytem. the problem that i have is the wireing harness came with 3 seperate plugs. i wired the main one up correctly and the raido work but the amps dont kick on. the second plug connects to the factory plug for the amp but doesnt tell me where to connect it, it says power amp, negative amp, power sub, negative sub. i tryied to connect these into the main harness and nothing happens. any ideas?

I have a small advantage. I have been doing installs for the better part of 11 years as a hobby. If you have a digicam, snap me a pic of the harnesses. The HEADUNIT might be differant, but it's still the Mach 460. If you look all the plugs left hanging when you pull the stereo out it throws you for a loop. There should only be TWO that you will actualy use. The first one is the main harness like you said. On that harness one of the wires is labled .con I think. It's blue. That's the remote turn on lead for the amp. Alot of people dont think it's for the amp becuase it doesn't say "Amp". The other connector is the small black square one. That one hooks up to the crossover network and to the amps. I could always be wrong because I have never done an install on a 99+. I hope this helps bro. I did exactly what your doing to a 99 Couture the other day; its not the 460 system but its mostly the same thing. I really doubt that Ford is going to use a lot of different wiring harnesses. Like Blev said there’s going to be a blue wire. In fact depending on what aftermarket harness you bought there might be two. One is straight blue and the other will be blue with a white stripe. I'm not %100 sure of this but the one with the white stripe is for a power antenna, basically when ever your radio is on you will be sending power through that wire. YOU DONT WANT THAT ONE , that is unless you one want to lesson to the radio. The other blue one is what you’re looking for, it is the remote wire so whenever the head unit turns on it will send power through it. If you can find the power wire for the amps all you will have to do is splice them together. If you were able to post a pic it would be easer to tell exactly. Like I said that’s what it was like on the Contour and I'm not positive that’s the way it will be on your car. To be honest you should just replace everything, the 460 system is not all that great and its trouble to wire up (as you can see). You can buy some good speakers on ebay for cheap. It is a lot easer to wire up, plus if you get rid of those amps you can but 6x9s in the back. Hope this helps.

DON'T SLICE/SPLICE ANY WIRES!!!! The factory harness already has the remote lead on it. You just have to look at the directions on the wiring kit. It will show you what wire on the NEW wire harness is the remote lead. That connects to the aftermarket headunit you are going to install. That wire is also blue and is the one you connect to the aftermarket harness. So you do NOT need to cut ANY wires. Hope your able to get it going bro.

I had the same problem until I came upon this here adapter made by Scosche, wired it up anbd worked like a charm. Got it at Wal-Mart for about 12 bucks

It is pretty simple - just match colors of wires and splice them together, it comes with a booklet instruction as well.

First off i want to thank you guys for your help. I bought a scoshe adaptor but it is still not letting the rear speakers work properly. Do you know the part number of the adaptor that you used??? I have the FAI-3A. Im not sure if that is right or not???

I had the same problem with my Scoshc unit. I had to take mine apart and a soldered wire was loose inside which mad my pass side speaker not work. Simple to solder. Taek off the cover and see if anything is loose while you have the radio on.

How do you add an aftermarket CD player AND amp/sub and still use the 460 amps/speakers?

There is no bypassing of the factory amps needed in the mach460 audio system! Send the crutchfield adapter back and save your 50 dollars! Go to walmart and pick up a harness for your year with the mach460. Connect each speaker wire as per the instruction matching colors. All you need to do is hook up the blue wire to the amp turn on and you will use the factory amps. I have done this in 12 mustangs' and it works great!

ok. There are 2 plugs, one is the main harness and the other is a small plug that has 8 wires on it that connect to the amp plug. It has 2 white, 2 blue/white, 2 grey,2 black. i connected the 2 blue to the blue from the deck. i put the 2 black to the ground from the deck, The grays to the speakers that were gray, and the whites to the speakers that had the white wires?? Is this sound right. i am having so much trouble with this
