JE pistons w/ trickflow valve relief + GT40 heads

go with standard style reliefs...or dual purpose pistons like Probe. The TFS heads require those offset reliefs due to valve angle differences.

You probably could use them up to a certain lift (dunno specifics), but if you haven't bought the pistons yet, better to get the right ones.

Yeah, I was thinking better to be safe than sorry. I had just found a good deal on a set of second hand brand new JE pistons, but they have Trick Flow valve reliefs.

Anybody else know for sure?

If I can I'd like to use these pistons with the TFS valve reliefs, cause their the oversize I need (.060 over which are a little harder to get and more expensive) and they are brand new never used with new rings for $300 shipped, and that's a hell of a good deal.

damn...that IS a good deal! You sure you don't want to upgrade to TFS heads? While you're doing the motor? The only other thing I'd say 0.060" is pretty far over for a 302 block...taking them 0.040" even has some adverse effects on cooling...

.060" overbore is a little large for a stock 302 but it can be done, it would be best to have the block sonic checked to make sure the bores will be strong and stable.

$300 is a very good deal, if they only have the Twisted wedge relief they will not work with any inline style head. I do not see a stock shelf JE piston for a TW in a
.060" in my catalog however.

If your using a stock rod and crank combo you will need to make sure the pistons are a 1.60" CH, with a .912" pin otherwise they will not work. Do you have the PT#??

What exactly are you trying to do?

The block is a '69 Boss 302 4 bolt main block, which I believe can be safely bored up to .125 over, so I'm not worried about that.

Yeah, I have looked on JE's website and don't see any .060 over pistons, so I think they must be custom pistons. Most piston makers don't really carry off the shelf .060 over that I have seen. The guy sent me pics of them but hasn't gotten back to me with a model number yet, but it the pics on the bottom of one of the pistons it looks like it says "JE 517F".

I am planning on going 331 stroker w/ custom cam, ported GT40x heads, and Kenne Bell 2.2, if I can find a good deal on some TFS heads I might spring for those too. These pistons are 1.175" CH and 1.235 pin height.

I've never even really looked into getting TFS heads, how do they rank?

I don't know where you heard that, but a Boss block is still just a thinwall windsor casting...you'd still need to sonic check it past 0.040" over...yes they are stronger, but R blocks, Darts, and World blocks are the ones that can be taken 125 or farther out...

Most BOSS blocks do not go more then .060-.080" I would have it checked...

With the 1.175" height you'll need a 5.4" rod, 3.25" stroke crank..just find out what the PT# or Job# and JE can give you all the info you need. (The info is also right on the side of the piston box)

A TFS head can be awesome... check your Private Messages...

Ok, I will make sure to have it sonic checked then, thanks for the info. How much does it cost to get something sonic checked and is it something that most machine shops can do?

So even though the Boss block walls are thinner it is still a very strong block right? Hopefully that's not another rumor I picked up somewhere, I was told it's right up there with R blocks and Dart.

Replied to your PM Rick, with a few other questions too.

Oh yeah, they're definitely stronger than your run of the mill 2 bolt bolt block. I think I recall Rick chiming in on this subject before with an answer of about 800-900hp before failure...

Yes 800 can be done on a good machined block and internals on a BOSS block, it however is not up to par with the DART blocks
