Job questions.

Hey guys. Im 17 right now. I need some advice from your grownups. I turn 18 in November so right now my job options are limited. Right now I work at Fazolis, a poorly run fast food resturaunt, VERy unprofessional, bad managment, the only reason ive been there for a year is the people are cool and fun, free food, and lots of hours. I work about 30 hours a week but make 6.70 an hour. Its pretty much impossible to get a raise, and if you do its a few cents.

My gf's dad manages 2 hotels at disney world and she just got a job there. I could get a job there, work the hours I want and make 7.50 an hour. Right now I work 5 days a week have no weekends and close everytime I work so im out till 11:30 at night on school nights, gotta be up at 6:40am.

If I chose to work at disney i can work 12 hour days, on saturday and sunday. Like 8am to 8pm. I would be pulling in about $180 every thursday. And I would get paid weekly whitch is awesome. Right now I get paid every two weeks, and with taxes taken out i get about 250 bucks every two weeks and have to work 30hrs 5 days a week. Compare that to 360 every 2 weeks (taxes not taken out) but only working 2 days 12hrs each.

Only down side of disney is its an hour drive, pretty rough on gas, thats why I only wanna work 2 days a week. and have them be on weekends.

Whitch would you guys do?


And once i turn 18 I REALLY want to work at discount auto parts or autozone. My question is, what do i have to do to get a job there, just be 18? Be interested in cars alittle? Do you have to pass a test? I know some of you guys work there.

Also Im a very hard worker, but when you get paid by the hour it dosent show. Id really like to find a job when I turn 18 that I get paid for how hard I work. What would you guys suggest when I turn 18? I turn 18 in november graduate HS in may.

Don't work at a parts store, it sucks. I would go for the hotel job if I were you. It could lead to better things. If you want to work in the automotive field, go work for a real shop. They will probally pay what you want, and you'll get some expereince.

My first "real" job was working at Grand Auto Supply. It was a fun job with crappy pay, not many raises and lots of hard work for 3 years. I have had a lot of jobs in between. I got a job at an Audi dealership a few years ago and I learned a LOT! If you like cars, dealerships have the potential to pay you lots of money depending on where you want to go in regards to job position. I would, for now, take the hotel gig and keep looking and applying elsewhere and see who bites at your application. I work construction now (decent pay) and go to school (criminal justice) and I am 28, but I wish I would have figured out what I wanted to do with my life earlier......my advice to you is figure out what directon you want your life to go (think about it long and hard) and get a job that will align yourself to be in a position to further your career in that line of work. It's all about relative job experience.

Dude I worked through college at Car Quest Auto Parts. It's not a bad gig at all. You get to drive around and eat all day- but it's REALLY fast paced. As long as you don't mind dealing with bungholes, and every parts store I know of hires for weekend help

I am going to have to agree with Strype on this one. Working for your girlfriend's dad (it was her mom's husband) just plain sucks (most of the time).
After six months, I was seeing the doctor for a prozac prescription. Plus, once you quit you will still have to see him. Not a good thing to have held over your head, especially if you quit on bad terms or get fired. Avoid that situation at all costs!!!!

He got mad about something I said to an insurance adjuster and asked me if I was stupid (btw that's not a good thing to ask me)...

So it was on a Friday when it happened. I was pulling trash when he asked me that, I took the full trash bag, said "I'll show ya stupid", walked out and emptied it in his parking lot, picked up his daughter (my now wifey) in my old 86 GT drop top and drove to Panama City Beach Florida that same day and stayed a week

I parked cars and made a ton of money. There were guys I worked with supporting a wife and 3 kids on the money we made while I only had my mustang to support. Though it was in detroit parking for drug dealers and mobsters... had my life threated a few times, someone tried to steal my car while I was in it, people got stabbed in front of me, had a few guns pulled on me, few valets got shot. But it was all good

long as your a stand up guy about quiting.. then you have no reason to worry about it. My best friends dad used to be my boss a year ago, and I see him a couple times a week now still. Same old same old except he has more respect for me than he did because him seeing how i worked. As far as jobs, i've worked at a ford dealership, electrician, mover, a boat dealership, and a junkyard. If you really want to learn.. work at a junkyard. Ive been all those routes and have been told by another friend of mine whos worked all those and worked at advanced, that a junkyard is a place to show how hard you worked. Like me, i turn in sometimes 12-15 tickets a day while others turn it 4.. i vote junkyard.. (plus you can scope out stuff you want, i found a 96 cobra motor in mine ) lol good luck man

If you think that's bad, try working for your dad. Oh man... When I was an early teen I lackied at his car lot to make my means. He paid me very well and let me go early all the time. But at the time we barely got along for too much at a time while at home, so being together all day didn't really make for a great situation. But when it was good, it was good.

Time to think about what you want to do with the rest of your life...

The State of Florida will do aptitude testing for free. Check with the local unemployment office near you. That will help you find what your talents and interests are. Once you have found out what your interests & talents are, find out how to improve them. That means more education. UCF for a 4 year degree, Seminole Community College for a 2 year or some vocational training, or Mid Florida Tech for vocational training.

Don't really know what to do and want more time and a paycheck while you are thinking about it? Consider 4 years in the Air Force or Navy if you are a techie kind of guy. The Air Force is good for techie types, live off base, work regular hours and just be sure to show up for formation clean & neat looking. If you are one of the guys who likes the thrill of combat, and there are some that do, the Army & and Marines are good. They both have techie type jobs available, but you are a gun toting solder first and a technician second. When you finish your enlistment and decision time rolls around you can re-enlist or take what you have leaned and head for the outside world. Then you have you VA benefits to pay for college or vocational school.

Whatever you do, don’t just settle for a paycheck You have a long time ahead of you, and doing something you are good at and like to do makes life a lot easier.

I parked cars too (For two days...I couldnt take these people bossing me around) in a night you can leave with like $60.00 cash and still get $8.50 a hour check.

I would go to the hotel job only if you want to get into hospitality...Mangers can make about $60k....you can meet some hot women from out of town.

I would take the carparts job if you want to get parts but meet only guys.

Also, you can get a job at most auto stores at 16. I would recommend just going into any store with your sesume and tie on and start talking to the manager...dont be shy..be profesional and insterested and expecially motivatied.....I dont want to disrepect anyone on here but it's very easy to get a job at a parts store....look at some of the guys that work there now..
Guys go in there knowing nothing about cars...you have a upper hand.

Trust me- if you go to school for something, make sure it's what you want to do. I'm thinking of a drastic career change right now myself. It's no fun to get up every morning hating your job and wishing you'd done something else to begin with.

Me? I sit behind this computer and stare at code in hopes of making the big bucks after a couple of years.

I worked as a landscaper throughout college...mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, build walls...all kinds of fun landscaping stuff.

You should look for a job like that since the pay is usually over $10 an hour to start, and there's always opportunity to work plenty of hours.

Even though I have a "real" job now, I still landscape on the weekends since it's fun & keeps me in shape. Also, while I was in college, I was making $15 an hour to mow lawns...not too shaby. The first year you pay your dues and do the $hit jobs, then it's smooth sailing from there.

that's me...lol!!! But I love every minute of just sitting back with my feet up, surfing the web on my dual monitors, and enjoying the music in on my iPod.

Highschool: Worked for a Valvoline Oil change. I made a killing (due to a lack of bills)

College: Intern for engineering firm (you make good $$ and they help you prepare for life)

Career: Mechanical Engineering....

Get into engineering or around it, the work is good and the pay is better than average.

hey mob, im only 17, but i started early and graduated a semester early too, so i was in your dilemna not too long ago. hell, i don't turn 18 until september, but i graduated last januaryand had pretty much nothing to do, but i lucked out and got a remodeling job. in your case however, i would seriously recomend a lube shop right now. having worked at 4 of them (lol dont ask) i can honestly say they were a kick in the ass! the work is easy, YOU GET FREE FLUIDS!!!!!! (just imagine getting mobil 1 for free, tranny flushes for free...etc) also, the people you work with are usually pretty cool, if not, lol then it kicks ass just making fun of them the whole time (thats how i got fired from one of them). and to top it off you get a lot of experience. now i know it just may be oil changing/tranny/rearend...etc experience, but it's experience none the less. and hell, after a few months you'll be able to change the oil on your car in like 5min or less. **** man, i've probably done close to or over 10,000 oil changes! some on the same cars, but still.

oh, and usually most lube shops either work really short sundays, or don't work them at all, not to mention most shops close anywhere from 5-7pm, so you'll have plenty of time to get cleaned up and get drunk on the weekends!

just a thought.

Thanks guys, didnt have time to read everything but i will. Just want to say my gf's dad manages two of the hotels and is VERY high at all of disney world, so I wouldnt be working directly under him, Im actually talking having someone else be my manager and pick up trash or something all day long at the theme parks. My girlfriend sells ice cream right in front of mission space at epcot, her dad working there would just give me a better chance of getting the job rahter then someone else.
