Jump Starting your Alternator?

I've heard that with the older style 3 wire alternators that have a seperate voltage regulator there is a way to bypass the voltage regulator and make the alternator charge until the engine is shut off again.
If this is true does anyone know how to do it? I need to figure out whether My alternator has gone out or the voltage regulator or even maybe a wiring problem somewhere.

You run the risk of unregulated voltage damaging your electrical components. I had this happen in my old jeep (which used all ford I6 engine wiring with jeep tags on it).

Yes there is a way, but it's not recommended.

The voltage regulator sends a signal to the alternator via the Field wire. The field wire then produces the field which the alternator works off of to create the charge. If instead of using the field from the VR, you connect it directly to the 12v battery source, or an ignition hot line (Turns off when car is turned off), you will constantly have the alternator running at full power.

Not recommended at all, due to the overwork the alternator performs, the fact that the alternator now puts more stress on the motor, and the overcharging of the battery/accessories.

I don't intend on running the car this way, just a test to find out which one has failed. I know I could take the alternator down to Autozone and have them check it but I would like to try and find out on my own first. Plus, you know those Autozone guys
I'm thinking that I might change out the old alternator with a single wire higher amp alternator.
