Jumped timing ?

So I bought a 1997 f150 last night ( I know it’s not a mustang but it’s a sn95 at heart ). But the guy said he thinks it jumped timing right after installing a new motor. It does seem to crank like its off timing ( farts thru exhaust and pops thru exhaust). I got it cranked for a split second last night but that’s it. All the sensors are plugged up spark plug wires are in the correct order. Any ideas on what to try before I condemn this motor

Are you able to remove the valve covers? If so it's possible to set the crank at a known position and then see where the cam alignment marks line up.

I actually got my hands on the periscope you stick down in the cylinder I’m going to check for valve to the piston marks If I find no marks I will pull valve covers

Definitely looks like valve marks Now what’s the chances there not bent

Almost zero chance that the valves haven't been damage. Sorry.

Well I have a set of pi heads from a previous project to swap. The short block should be okay correct And I wonder what made it jump timing 140k miles
