might have to get a junk yard T5 any idea on a round about price i might be able to pic one of for and also what is a rebuild kit price.. one htat has a full rebuild
I paid 350 for one. Got it. It was the wrong tranny, input shaft about 1/2 in too big. The guy I got it from told me to "F" myself, literaly.

There is a pick n pull chain in California called Ecology. They have a location in Phoenix. A few times a year they will have a half off sale. Manual transmissions run $90 regardless of make. I got half off that. Granted, all the stangs are Foxes and 4 bangers but they are cheap.
I opened up the T-5 when I got it home to inspect the inside and it looks in real good shape. The input shaft is nice and tight with almost no play at all.
If you are going to rebuild one yourself, you might as well get a cheap 4 cylinder T-5 and purchase the upgrade gears and input shaft when you get the rebuild kit. Why spend so much more on a v-8 T-5 when you can save that cash for the upgraded gearset making it a v-8 compatible tranny in strength and gear ratios with new parts?
ok well heres anohter question. the t-5 i have now works perfect in every gear but second. i dont know what the guy before me did to it but if i go to shift from first to seconds hard and fast it grinds or if im higher up in the rpms it grinds. but if i shift from first to neutral to seconds it shifts fine no problems at all. what would cause this a bad syncro? or what. also if it is a second gear syncro what would it cost to replace it. i called ford and they said i had to replace a whole bunch of ****. they said i had to buy a huge kit. that cost about 400 bucks with my fathers 15% discount since he works for ford. so if any one can help on this would be great.
yeah the grinding your describing is definitely a bad synchro. Expect to be buying the 250$ ford racing t5 kit from summit and a new second gear. If the teeth on the gear have been ground half as much as mine were when i pulled it out, youll need to replace it. Dont waste your money on the crappy rebuild kits on ebay. I did and had to rebuild my tranny twice. But, the rebuild itself is not that hard if you have some knowledge and patience. Expect to do every step 3 times to correct putting something in wrong, and take your time. however, itll still be less than 400 bucks. I got a second gear off ebay from reman express and the gear has held up great.
When the lining on it wears, the synchro can't slow the gear down so it grinds when you shift it into second. I would recommend the video from Hanlon Motorsports. It is very good and will let you know pretty quickly if you are up to rebuilding it yourself. By the time you disassemble the T-5 to change that synchro, you may as well put it back together with all new synchros and bearings.
For around the price you can get the rebuild kit from Ford you could probably get the rebuild kit, video, and a second gear from Hanlon Motorsports.
I had a t5 that is did exactly what you are talking about, it wasn't a syncro though it was the 1-2 slider which is what is sped up by the synco to engage the gears. The teeth on the slider were rounded pretty bad but the syncros were brand new so it could be caused by either one of these.
I just bought a T5 from a 90gt for $160. It is supposedly in need of a 4th gear main bearing. Guy said it would pop out of 4th gear. I don't need the trans, I just bought if to learn how to rebuild them in case my T5z desides to crap out and I have to upgrade to the G-force gearset. They seem pretty simple to rebuild.
A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.
