Hello all,

Well I finally boughta a Mustang. It's a '96 Cobra with 61k miles on it. It has a few mods and one of them is a Steeda short shifter. The shifter makes a TON o noise (kind of an air whooshing sound as well as a metal grinding noise). Is this normal? Should I switch shifters? Get gaskets? Anything?

Thanks!

did you get the one with a nex kit and a cal sticker on the back?

my triax makes noise/vibrations but what you're saying sounds excessive.

Yeah, that's the one.

It does seem a bit suspect, but the guys at Apex said it was nothing serious. I'll see if I can live with it for a while, and then maybe switch shifters.

Pull the trim piece off and see if the metal and rubber thing is still around the base of the shifter. If not you should be able to see the ground by looking at it. Maybe you can find one to put in if its not there.

There is a rubber piece but it has a tear in it..

make sure you have the inner boot installed. you could try to gasket the shifter to the tranny. other than that you just have to live with it or replace it.

the steeda is noiser than other shifters from what I have read. you could always just sell it and get a different flavor.

I got the hurst as I had driven t-56 cars with hurst shifters. no noise.

It's not unusual to have more noise than you are used too. The sound dampning material was probably discarded after the install.

How much did you pay for yours? There is a Mystic here for sale and I'm seriuosly considering buying it.

The steeda in my mustangs was loud, it has to do w/ no rubber insulators on the handle and the handle is made of lightweight alluminum which isnt the greatest "insulator"
if you get tired of it, get an MGW, nice and quiet

I had the Triax.
Switched to Pro 5.0 :nice:
Much smoother and much quieter!!! Trust me.
Only problem is the Pro 5.0 handle sucks.
Either use your Steeda handle, or send the Pro 5.0 handle to Pro 5.0 and they will replace it with their "medium" handle which is very similar to the Triax handle for FREE.
That's what I did.
