Just bought my First car, couple quick questions

So i bought a 1990 LX 2dr hb with flowmaster exhaust already on it, and i have few quick questions.

1. How many of you learned how to drive manual on your stangs? Im gonna learn soon, and im a bit scared lol.

2. My clutch is engaging really high, i think its the clutch cables self adjuster is broken. Wheres the best place to get a replacement.

3.Im gonna have to install the stock exhaust again to pass emissions right? cause its got no cats atm.

1. Ya i learned (well am learning still) on my stang and its areally not all that bad. I just kept it in the neighborhood until i felt comfortable with it to take it to main streets. I think that it is critical to practice driving stick everday though.
2. you can get one from any major parts supplier. I would suggest steeda

to pass emissions you might not have too, but you will the pass a visual test. but anyways....there should be a little play like 1-2 inches at the top of the pedal. it doesnt feel like very much with your foot but it is enough. instead of buying a new self adjuster buy an aftermarket quadrant and firewall adjuster. check out upr they have nice stuff.

if you ever find a 4dr HB, let us know. that would be a rare beast.

if the clutch engages high (like you hardly have to press the clutch pedal to disengage or engage the clutch), that suggests the quadrant and pawl are working and recently adjusted.

an aftermarket quadrant is always a good idea, IMHO. there are many vendors and suppliers of them. you will need a FWA too (firewall adjuster - you wont have the self adjust mechanism anymore). stock style (non adjustable) cables are best liked.

Im new to the whole clutch assembly so im a little confused with some of the parts your suggesting. can you explain a little further? direct links would be awesome too!

I almost have to push the clutch to the floor to get it to engage, thats what i meant by high. My buddy who has a similar stang said he thinks the self adjuster is just dead

gorgeous stang man. i think that the install isnt that hard, but i would just go out and buy one of the many 5.0 mustang books out their from borders or tower. One of em is bound to have a write up on a CLutch quadrant install.

One other question, The car seems to be running rich (Exhaust is black, not grey) how do i tune it down?

yea that is purrrrtty. I had a friend that learned on a 5.0, took him a week and after a month he could power shift with the best of him. Too bad that car had electrical problems and the dash lit on fire

ok, to adjust the stock clutch, try pulling up on the pedal (the wrong way). see if it ratchets and adjusts. if it wont, i would diagnose the situation further, but an aftermarket clutch quadrant is a great mod for anyone.

aftermarket quadrants are not bad to install - getting the old one out can be a pain.

FWA is not too bad either. some designs are better than others.

have you pulled codes yet? search posts by Jrichker in here. he has a standard post for pulling the codes using a paperclip. one can also use a code reader from a store (usually around 20-30 bucks). some parts stores also will pull codes for free.
a code can be stored without illuminating the CEL (check engine light).

then go from there.

took it to a mechanic before i bought it, had a code 31. any idea what that means?

it doesnt have cats on it At the moment
