Just drove an 05 Mustang! Sweeet!

Okay, I'm working at this automotive press event (all manufacturers) and I ask a journalist what he thought about the new Mustang GT, he told me it was great, Ford has done a great job, etc..etc... I told him that I used to own a 65 Fastback K-code, 85 GT (first new car), and 92 Vert. He tells me "you wanna take it for a spin?", cool and collected I say "sure", on the inside I'm like "Hell Yes!"

First he drives the GT (red with red leather) off the event property and already I'm feelin the car, much larger on the inside and solid...then I take over. I drive it easy cuz the cops are out, they know the Journalist have been blasting by with GT's, Corvettes, and AMG's.

Long story shot, the car just kicks ass, drive it just couple of feet and you can tell this is no FOX. First corner you ever take in this car will tell you two things...wow, the steering is actually sharp, and rear axle is seriously planted. I was very impressed, I was expecting some steering correction and the rear axle to dance a bit.

Major impressions;
a) Very solid structure, no rattles or creaks (that's new for a Ford)
b) Clutch take-up and shifter are so smooth, my grammy can drive it
c) Steering is so different than what I remember on my fox, nicely weighted and razor sharp.
d) Rear axle...impressive, average Joe couldn't tell if the rear axle is solid or independent.
e) Only car I know in recent memory where the engine sound is actually better in the car that it is on the outside....put major grins on my face
f) I haven't spent any time behind Cobras, but this car feels very strong and the exhaust/engine noise is very stout.
g) rear q-panels lips are actually rolled!! Can you say 305's!

I did have a few issues with the interior details (e-brake handle, hard to read meters, etc...), but who really gives a crap, you just need to drive this car and the only thing you notice is the sweet shifter, engine sound, and serious acceleration.

Anyhow, that's my quick impression from a 5 minute drive.....I really want one now, I don't think too many folks will be disappointed. Oh yeah, I forgot one negative, what's up with the wheels and 235 tires?

Hey Clutch,
Thanks for the info. I really was planning on getting one in the spring. I live in the Chicago suburbs and it just makes no sense to buy one now. Plus the dealers are giving the lines-"if you didnt order by now you wont be able to get one until summer, but I have 2 available now" LOL. But reading what you wrote makes my heart pump and makes me want to go get one now. My wife thinks i'm an Idiot. I already sold my vettte!!Thanks again

No problem. I would wait, I'm sure Ford is working out few minor kinks. I remember when the Beetle came out and the BMW mini, dealers were telling me "you'll never get it below MSRP", yeah...whatever.

I was looking at geeting a used 90's ZR-1 Corvette, but now I'm not so sure. The car feels better than my 93 Vette did. Sounds better that's for sure, which was my biggest pet peeve with the Vette.

I had the same Journalist take me around the track in an 05 MB C55 AMG, which was absolutely amazing, but he told me as nice and fast as this car is, for the price he would take the Mustang over the AMG. Different class of car for sure, but going around the track he said they feel similar and same grins.

I haven't been this excited since i was in High School and buying my first new car, 85 Mustang GT.
