Just got off the phone with Jegs about a Hammer Shifter

I know this topic has been talked to death but I can't find a straight foward answer. I wanna get the Hammer Shifter for my 98 GT. I told the guy from Jegs I wanna be able to manually upshift and downshift any gear and asked if I would need a shift kit to do that. He said the Hammer shifter will allow me to upshift and downshift at any gear just like a manual. Is this correct? Or will I need the shift kit as well?

You can do that with your stock handle, you don't need a special handle to do it. If you want to shift like a manual, I think you need to get a manual valve body. Someone will correct me if I am wrong...

But doesn't the Hammer allow you to manually shift and hold any gear? I wish I knew the answer so I could just buy the d*mn thing

I don't know about your car, but on mine if I stick it in 1st, it stays there until I click second. Same with second, until I click Drive. BTW, mine is a 98 too.

I heard that with this shifter you can hold any gear (1-2-3-4) and downshift at your free will

You can upshift and hold gears by manually shifting it into 1-2-D. Just be careful when you manually downshift. Manually downshifting the auto is horrible for the tranny. It puts tremendous heat and stress on the tranny. If you get a manual valve body or Jerry Mod and a Tranny cooler, then I BELIEVE that it is ok for the tranny. I asked the same question to Mustang Monthly and that is the answer that they published in the mag. They just said that downshifting is bad for the tranny, but upshifting if ok

What he said. I know a few people that drop their's from D to 2nd at slow speeds, but I sure as hell won't chance it.

hahahaha just talked a guy from summit. he said the hammer shifter does nothing but look good and if i wanna be able to manually upshift and downshift any gear i'm gonna need the transgo shift kit. i thought so

The B&M Hammer shifter does not change how the transmission works at all. It is merely a ratchet shifter that replaces the stock shifter. You use it to put the transmission in 1, 2, D, N, R, or P using a ratched motion. If you are in 1 and push the handle forward, it will shift to 2. If you push it forward again, it will shift to D. If you push it forward again, it will shift to N. To shift to OD, you push a button. If you are in D and pull the handle back, you will shift to 2. Pull it back again, you will shift to 1. The transmission will react exactly the way it does if you shift into these gears with the stock shifter. If you want total control over your gear selection, you also need a manual valve body. The manual valve body will cause the tranny to shift instantly to the gear you select and the shift will jar your teeth out.

You don't want a shift kit. Go to www.modulardepot.com and do a search. You will find a long explaination from Jerry W (as in Jerry mod) on this.

A shift kit improves your shifts, makes them firmer. I don't think a manual valve body does anything except make you shift your auto like a manual. I don't think there are any performance gains to be seen with it. I don't have one nor do I know anyone who does, so I wouldn't know for sure......

A shift kit will ruin your tranny. A manual valve body will make it shift like a mother and improve you ET's.

Jerry Mod!!!!! screw shift kits!!! Its failry cheap too.

I want the Jerry mod so bad, I just don't want to try it myself since my car is a daily driver and I can't afford to mess the tranny up by attempting it myself. Anyone live ANYWHERE in Ohio that has done this before and would like to make a couple bucks by doing mine for me???? I will supply plenty of beer too.... any takers???

I am still trying to find someone here in central Texas that can do it for my car. I dont want to mess it up either LOL!! I need to call more of the local Mustang shops though. I did find out that one tranny shop has done it before on a few Stangs and have had good results. I may attempt it myself if my Dad feels like helping though HAHAHA!

I knew the shift kits were bad news, I just didn't know anything about manual valve bodies. Thanks for the clarification.

What manual valve body do you reccommend? I'm looking for one that if I leave it drive it will still shift through all the gears but hammer when I want to shift it myself. Will those automatic shifts be smooth or stiff? Also, will downshifting with a manual valve body still be bad? I know it's not good for the rear end but what about the tranny?

You may want to look at the Performance Automatics street/strip valve body for the 4R70W. I have the PA fully manual transbrake valve body. I don't know what the automatic shifts will be like, but I assume they will be very firm. I also don't know about down shifting. Under normal driving conditions, it's no problem at all. You just down shift as you slow down and need the lower gear. I don't street race, so I never down shift under WOT.

I was looking at JDs Performance and saw the PA Street/strip right after I posted. Is $255 a good price? I really appreciate your input, thanks
