i hated every second of it. my dust boot faught me every step of the way, my fingers bleeding and im tired out of my mind. i havent even driven it yet, but it wasnt easy to do and took much more than an hour. i hope this is worth it. my boot is ripping itself and i havent even put the rest of the bolts in yet. would you be concerned with this?

shouldi get another boot and take my dash off to do it right? or just try to get the other bolts in and call it a day?

edit. by bolts i mean the top 2 of the dust boot. i have the bottom 2 in.

damn, when i did it i took about an hour, i just went real slow with a friend we were chatting and working at the same time. I'd get another rubber boot, you dont' wanna put it together only to have a problem. Best of luck getting it together, once it's on it will be worth it

When I've installed my shifter I removed the center console then it's just the bolts from the tranny. I should take like 30 mins but if you leave the console in place it'll be a PITA. As far as the boot is concerned it's up to you. Mine is a little damaged over the years but it's fine. Good luck

That's exatcly how mine was. Cut up fingers and all. Even ripped that boot. I put it back in and I could hear the transmission more, but now that mine's out I'm going to replace it. If your transmission doesn't whine then I wouldn't worry about it. If your tranmission whines it'll be very annoying.

sir, the grommet on the boot is supposed to slide down onto the shifter a lot more than that, from what i understand it should be in the same position that it was when you started, level with the bezel.

edit: try spitting on the shifter and rubbing a bit on the inside of the grommet to make it slide downa bit easier, the directions said it can be a huge PITA

as for those top two bolts, they will be a big pita without the console removed, so it's your choice

luckily my tranny's already out so it'll be a bit easier in my install. and if you're going from stock shifter it will definitely be worth it

took me about 30 min. to do, very easy, i popped out the middle console. I didn't even put that rubber boot back on, all that is for it sound deadining. I could imagine that being a PITA without taking the middle console out though. Nice shifter

I feel your pain too, i tried getting the front two with my fingers and by using a little wrench which u could only turn like 1/8 of a turn at a time, then i said screw it and took off the whole console and did it from there and was well worth it. I would use that boot and if its ripped bad get another one, if its little like mine im sure its fine. but you would be able to hear a big difference if u dont have it

it is a little louder, but i dont mind it really. i guess when i get the chance ill get a new boot and take my time and take the center. i just drove it and its amazing, so much more precise. as for where it goes on the shifter i thought it was in the right spot, thats where the instructions say it goes i think, i dont know though. thanks for all the help.

I removed the console, and I had no problems with the dust boot...

And yea, that boot is supposed to be alot further down...

Slow down, take your time, and do it right.

Hey Hence, are there any screws at the forward part of the console that need to be removed? I know of the 4 at the back, but I didn't know how to get the front part undone....

I had to remove the 4 screws that hold the center console to the dash, to remove the console.

Plus the other stuff.

-Bottom left dash
-Metal Plate below the sterring wheel

There are a handfull of screws to remove, I can't think off the top of my head at the moment where all of them are.

4 5/16" bolts hold on the armrest, 4 philips screws hold on the console cover (2 under the shifter bezel), two 7mm bolts on the big vinl piece under steering wheel, 2 bolts holding the console in on the drivers side dash, and 2 around the trunk/fuel release in the glove box (just went through that twice putting my heater core in). also helps if you notch the center console under the shifter trim piece to get it around the shifter (youll see where if its not already there)

when i did the t5 swap, there are no bolt holes for the front bolts in my AOD car, so i just used the back two, and when i take it apart, the rubber boot just slides out pretty easily. Mine ripped anyway so it doesnt do much.

Thanks Hence/Chuck... I knew of the bolts in the back of the console and the two under the shifter plate, I just didn't know if there were any more.

Just get some ratchet box end wrenches and you dont have to go through the pita to remove the entire center console.
