K&N extreme air filter lid

Hey guys, i am considering buying a new 14 inch K&N filter that is like 4 inches tall and then getting the extreme lid for it........do any of you have this? is it good? worth the money ect. Also, where can i get the bottom base, i dont want to have to buy a whole air cleaner and then replace the lid and filter ya know...........any suggestions or anything would be appreciated

Summit

IO believe summit and jegs both sell the xtreme as a kit...has element, xtreme lid, and drop carberator base...

Check them out and see...

I would think you would need the drop base with the 4" element without a scoop or cowl hood or such...

well i have a 3 inch cowl hood so i am looking to get more air flow through the tp of the air cleaner

Be careful of a drop base 14" on a Ford. Base might hit distributor. Flat bases are what is used mostly with 14" and anything over that.

ohhhhhhhh that could be a problem, so do u think i should go with the 11 inch in stead and that would clear the dist.?

A 14" will be fine, actually better, just be sure to get the flat base.

Since you have the 3 inch cowl hood I can't imagine you running into any clearance issues with the flat base.\

I never got the xtreme air lid but have friends that run them. They like them. It doesn't let more air in, but allows for air to get in even easier. You can run a drop base if you have the clearance. Measure what you have and figure how far down you can go without hitting. I used to use a 2 in drop base on my 289. I fount that if I went to low it would run into the throttle link.

If you look at Jegs online cataloge, they sell a complete assembly. I cannot intelligently opine whether it will give you any performance benefits but I can aver that whatever benefits you do realize will be more pronounced than any sticker or ground effects.

k, so go with the 14 inch flat base but meansure around for any clearance issues........thanks again guys

Unless you have a hole in the hood, I am not sure I see huge benefits. Regular K&N assemblies flow far more than your carb, especially the 4 inch tall ones, and unless you are using it to get cooler air, I am not sure I see the benefits.

You might find interference with the distributor. A way to get around this is to buy an offset base and rotate the assembly slightly. Or, since you have a cowl hood rotate the assembly to the rear. I run a 14x3 K&N element and an Xtreme lid. Can't say whether or not it helped any, but I just liked the look better and figured any filtered opening would have to help somewhat, be it the air chage or air temp.

gp001 in that picture is looks like you have no clearence issues at all, and that looks like a 14 inch filter...........im still confused how it would interfere with the distrib.

If you read his post it quite clearly states that he uses an OFFSET base on the filter, that is why he has so much space.

You can run a standard hole base in a drop format in 14 inch size on a ford, you just have to re-route the top two plugs in the dizzy tight to the cap since the base will actually touch the rubber of the caps.

I have a drop base air filter with a K&N XTream lid.

I had no issues with the drop base filter interfering with my stock distributor, but it just BARELY clears my MSD Pro Billet.

I really didn't notice any difference in the feel of power with the Xtream lid, but it's nice to know that the motor has more surface area to pull air from if it needs it. Besides, I got the lid for free of a friend who trashed his car and didn't want it anymore.
