key problem

a few months ago I lost a key so had a copy made at the dealership. I guess I only tried it in the door, because tonight when I lost my other original key, and had to use the spare, it didnt work. The ignition turned, and the dash lights came on and stereo, etc., but no crank. the red security dash light was blinking like crazy.

I am afraid the dealership won't be able to program the key or anything without either the car (which is stranded at a mall 15 miles away) or an original key (that I have lost )

any ideas?

There's no way around it, you're going to have to have the car towed to a Ford dealer.

If you're still under warranty, call Ford's Roadside Assistance, and they'll tow it for free, but you'll have to pay for the cost of new keys and programming.

The key is electronically coded if you have the security system. You could have programmed the copy yourself when you still had the original.

thats pretty funny I just found out the same thing, I just got my mustang last week and only got one set of keys so I went to sears to make a 2nd pair and it opened the door fine but wouldnt start the car.

So I just got the spare incase I lock my keys inside the car, hopefully i dont lose them [knock on wood].

Save yourself some additional grief and have the dealer make you 2 additional keys. I lost my spare key and fob. went to the local Ford store to get another made up .$85.00 shop time and one key programed. Dealers says for another 25bucks will program another key. Makes sense if you lose another key your back down to one key and needing to make another one up so that as stated in previous posts you
won't need a tow tot he nearest Ford dealer.Even if you buy blank keys off the internet you will need to have Ford program them . I think it was like sixty something dollars.

thanks zoomerman. not only did the dealership apprently not make my key right, but he didn't offer to make me another one for 25. I didn't know they did that. I will get two more made then. That will make 3 keys and 2 lost since buying it last year

if you already have 2 programmed keys then you can program additional keys yourself, you do not have to take to the dealer.
Insert the first programmed key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the key from the OFF position to the ON position (maintain the key in the ON position for a minimum of 3 seconds and less than 10 seconds).
Turn the key to the OFF position and remove the first key from the ignition lock cylinder.
Within 5 seconds of turning the key to the OFF position, insert the second programmed key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the key from the OFF position to the ON position (maintain the key in the ON position for a minimum of 3 seconds and less than 10 seconds).
Turn the key to the OFF position and remove the key from the ignition lock cylinder.
Within 10 seconds of turning the key to the OFF position, insert the unprogrammed key (the new key) into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the key from the OFF position to the ON position (maintain the key in the ON position for a minimum of 3 seconds and less than 10 seconds).
If it is desired to program additional key(s) (only up to 8 keys total can be programmed into the PCM), repeat Steps for each additional key that needs to be programmed.
Start the vehicle with the new key(s).
NOTE: A maximum of 8 passive anti-theft system (PATS) keys can be programmed into the powertrain control module (PCM) during this programming procedure.

When I sold new Fords, I always suggested to my customers that they buy an extra key and have it programmed right away. When you have two good keys, you can buy a third key, have it cut, and pay just $25-$30. You can program it yourself, as outlined in your owner's manual and in the post above by partsbill.

If you only have one good key, you have to go to a Ford dealership to have a key cut, then programmed using a Ford computer that plugs into your OBD-II port. Takes about 20-30 minutes for the computer to come up with the code and program the new key, so you're paying 1/2 hour labor which brings the charge to about $70-$80.

If you have no good keys, your car is stranded where it's at. Has to be towed to the dealership, unless they make "house calls," and you'll be looking at an hour or two of labor while the computer is hooked up to fish out the right codes to program two new keys. Cost ends up being anywhere from $150-$200.

Of course, I've heard horror stories from customers who were charged several hundred dollars at other Ford dealerships to do two keys, so it pays to call ahead and shop for the best price.

Or, better yet, just make sure to buy a 3rd key while you still have 2 good keys. How's that old saying go? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?

When you get a new key, make sure that it works in the ignition with either side up. I had a spare made that only worked in the ignition with one side up. It wouldn't turn with the other side up. The dealer was able to fix it. BTW, I do not use the original keys. I keep them for spares. I figure that if I need another copy made, it is better for the dealer or locksmith to work with an original key in almost mint condition than a copy or a used original.

Also, there is a key code for your keys. My dealer told me not to lose the key code. Apparently that is a help in making a new key if they don't have a good key to copy, but I think you still have to go through the programming procedure.

I can't speak for all dealerships, but we keep a copy of the key code with the invoice for every new Ford we have just in case a customer loses their keys, loses their key code, or both. On a side note, when someone comes in for a key to be made, they have to show proof that it is for a car that is registered to them and show picture ID.
