Kluge for missing bit of sheet metal

I hoping for opinions on an idea (or a better approach).

After some inexpert bodywork, the very top part of my door jamb (latch pillar) is missing on the 67 convertible. It's the part with the top hole for the seals. Without the right attaching point those seals quickly get mangled.

The ship has sailed on the shop making it right, so my plan is to get some thin strips of steel, drill three holes in them, and use longer screws in the holes that are there to hold those strips on the back of the panel. That way there should be a hole in approximately the right place.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I meant one piece for each side, since I believe it is missing on both sides.

I don't think welding is an option without having to paint that part of the quarter at least. I'd love to be wrong since I can't justify the cost. Also, I need to press the car into short term service ASAP due to a mishap with my parked daily driver and a garbage truck.

As for how the piece came to be missing, IIRC he removed the old rusted quarter with an air chisel and took out the top of the pillar. I think you or Rusty posted pictures or a link of the proper way to go about this. He was supposed to fab a fix.

As for why it didn't get fixed, he took forever, got sick, and went bankrupt. I was lucky to get the car back in something close to one piece. He did beautiful work on my friend's 66 coupe two years prior, but I didn't read the signs.
