When I crank my car there are a few knocks and then after a few seconds it stops. It sounds like it is coming from the bottom end. Could this be the oil pump going bad or already gone bad? Thanks.
I would.... Sounds its knocking under no oil pressure, til it builds up. We see that at work every few weeks or so...and its pretty much always on an old, tired, high mileage motor in need of a rebuild. A motor in good condition will just make valvetrain noise at zero pressure, if that even. No knocking.....
Okay say I plan on rebuilding this motor. I plan on adding heads, cam, intake, all that major stuff later on. How would I rebuild the bottom end of the motor in preparation for this? Would I go ahead and build it to be able to just bolt these items on or what would you suggest? Thanks.
It ALL depends on how fast you want to go. I have a new shortblock 302, with cam, heads, intake, etc...but it's a stock shortblock. Only difference is it doesnrt have the old factory forged pistons, it has new hypereutetics. If you wanna go real fast, spend some extra cash on pistons and connecting rods......otherwise, stock is fine. FYI, cast pistons and hypereutetics don't do well in nitrous/forced induction applications.
Okay, I have heard lots of good stuff about KB pistons. Would that be worth looking at? And also what kind of connecting rods do I need to go for? I am looking to at least get in the 12's you know when I start adding all this stuff on there. So I just wanted to go ahead and prepare for what I am going to add in the future. Maybe you understand. I eventually want to bolt on a supercharger. I don't really plan on throwing nitrous on it though. But if I was to add nitrous to it, what kind of pistons would I go for?
My advice to you.. check out D.S.S. at www.dssracing.com. They can put together a shortblock that'll withstand whatever you want to throw at it. I got my kit from them and am pretty pleased, except now my tranny took a crap on me so I can't drive the car AGAIN.

How many miles on the engine? How much oil pressure? At idle? at 2000 RPM?
WHAT oil filter are you using? Why do I ask? I ONLY run the Ford Motorcraft filters. I used one of them Fram Teflon ones and got knock fer a few secs on startup all the time... Switched back to the stock Motorcraft one and problem is gone..
Alot of time when this happens the anti drainback valve in the filter is either not working or just *****ty.
This was the EXACT same situation when I had the T Type. Had to run the AC Delco OR Purolator Pure One filters only.
