I got bored and went at pair of late 70's heads with the die grinder. It took about an hour to get all of them ground down. now I just need to open up the ports a little and smooth it all out. I figured a gasket match port job would let her breath a little more.

anyone have tips on porting? the one observation I have had so far is that you should do the thermactors before touching anywhere else in the ports. since you would not have to worry about messing up the ports after working them over.


I really need to wear a face mask when doing this. I have had black boogers since yesterday.

I am NOT an expert, but:


1. protect your lungs with a mask, and your eyes with goggles. Iron filings are very bad for your health.

2. worry more about the roof than the floor. Dont overdo it.

3. Dont nick the guides....best thing to do is put an old valve in there you dont mind nicking up.

4. transitions are key....smooth the airflow from one point to another. Gasket match to intake and header if you can.


Wasnt that hard, was it? Basic porting on iron is NOT black art.....you learn a lot and can save hundreds of dollars......

I did manage to hit the very edge of the guide, but it was not the guide hole. just the side of the guide.

What do you use to outline the gasket? I used spray paint last night and it held up, but I would rather use something that I know will not chip off or get rubbed away easily.

I havent started porting yet, I figured I would get the thermactors out of the way since they seem to be the most time consuming part.

it went pretty fast, just waiting for my air compressor to catch up was the worst part.
6.5 hp craftsman oil less.

Ive used paint like yourself, after letting it tack up a bit. Im sure more experienced folks here have a better way.....

standard abrasives has a pretty detailed write up. but I cant find the link

they used a blue metal dye. but I havent been able to find it.

If I werent doing my stinking taxes I would be finishing the darned things.
