Support the motor from the engine bay with a hoist or engine support - remove the K-member, remove headers (and other parts required), remove the transmission, lower the motor a few inches, install new transmission, raise everything, install K member, remove engine support.
You can remove it without taking off the headers you just have to REALLY work it around. If you still can't get it, loosen the drivers side header to make a little more room.
