I have a 68 coupe that i have owned for 25 years.I was given a 302 out of a 1988 Town Car and would like to swap it for the 289.What would be involved. Will the AOD flex plate work with my c4?Can I use the serpentine belt system even though I will change the waterpump to the early style? What do you think of the Edelbrock package of heads, cam, and intake for a performance increase? Can I use the late style altenator, if so what mods?

1: you will need a 157 tooth flexplate with a 50oz balance factor as the AOD flexplate wont work. summit racing carried the flexplate you need.

2: you can use the serpentine belt system, but you must keep the reverse rotation pump, otherwise you will be back here asking why my engine overheats. if you want the early pump, then use the early belt system.

3: the edelbrock package will work with any year 289/302/351w. go for it.

4: as i recall the 88 used the same style alternator that your car has, thus you can bolt it in place with no wiring mods. i would recommend changing the regulator to match the alternator though.

the town car trans is going to be 1" longer than any other aod, so you will need to get the driveshaft shortened accordingly (ask me how i know!) your shaft will end up around 49" long, or less depending on the yoke on the rearend, mine measured out at just under 48. yoke was from 63 country squire wagon.

does that motor have the 1 belt serp or the 2 belt serp system if its the 2 belt like alot of the 80's big cars had u can use the serp with ur early water pump and delete the whole ac setup and it should have the internal regulated alternator that can be wired to ur car but u would need to remove the factory regulator and jump a few wires to make it work right

you can use standard rotation water pump on the late model (5.0 not town car, T.C. is already standard rotation), you just have to reroute the belt. Many people are running this, I have mine setup this way just not in the car yet.
