My buddy has a 1965 Mustang with a stock 289 and C4 transmission. The trans needs to be rebuilt or replaced. He found a TCI C4 with bell housing, torque converter and flex plate for sale locally that came out of a 70's F100 with a 302. Pretty sure his C4 has the 24 splines with the 157 tooth flex plate and the TCI has the 26 splines with the 164 tooth flex plate. Would he be able to use the TCI if purchased? I don't know crap about these types of transmissions. At the moment he's not looking to convert to a AOD or T5.

He'd need to use the converter that comes with the transmission to match the spline count of the input shaft. That may necessitate the use of the larger flexplate which would then necessitate the use of the larger bell. That's where he might run into problems as the transmission tunnel in the truck is larger than the Mustang, so he may run into clearance issues. The best thing to do would be to get as good a comparison as you could between the outgoing transmission and the new one, noting where the old one was closest to the tunnel and trying to be sure that the new one will clear in those areas before buying. The next area of concern would be his exhaust - the larger bell may interfere with the Mustang's exhaust routing. Again, you'd want to pay attention to this area as well.

I've not dealt with a C4 in a long time either, so hopefully someone will come along and correct anything that I may have gotten wrong.
