Lifespan of Catalytic Convertors

What is it? I've heard they go bad, but how many miles do the average cats last on late model stangs?

Stocks probably last five years plus. Get an offroad and you wont have to worry how long.

I would think their longevity would be a function of miles, not years...I know some people here have experienced their cats going bad but I am unable to locate these threads. Anyone want to chime in on how many miles before cats go bad?
