Who would win in a 1/4 mile between a stock Lightning and a 69 Fastback with a pretty much stock 4V 351 Windsor?

What year Lightning?

The newer generations L is in the 13s, which a stock 69 351 4V isnt, but can be easily made to run 13s. Watch out the L's mod very easy

My money is on the L by at least a second

What does "pretty much stock" refer to?

It was rebuilt and then we bought it so we aren't quite sure what all is in it. But in a month we are dropping a pretty built 460 into it.

Not necessarily running one but just wondering where I stood against one as of now. I am pretty positive that 460 could beat one at the drag strip.

I have driven a 67 Mustang with 429 and a 2001 Lightning. It would be close. the mustang stands a chance because it takes a second for the blower to spool up and there is a good chance the driver will smoke the tires. The Lightnings are dang fast....they were made that way.

Ive got both. My 65 GT coupe is a good stretch stonger than a close to stock 351W and its not even close to being in the same galaxy as my 2001 Lightning when it comes to performance. It takes NO TIME for the blower to spool up, its a roots supercharger not a turbo... instant torque!!! launch @ 1200 rpm roll into the gas and go like mad.. Since you were asking about a 99 it does stand a chance of being a bit slower to accelerate, the '99-00's had 3.55 gears and a heavy steel driveshaft while the 2001 and up have 3.73's and an aluminum driveshaft so they do accelerate harder. Plus you can spend around $500 on a lightning for a blower pulley upgrade, valve body and a chip and very very easly dip deep into the 12's, a few have even done high 11's with those mods in the right atmospheric conditons.

superchargers don't "spool." turbos do. the whole point of a supercharger is on-demand boost. some highend blowers take some time to reach full power, but they don't "spool" And I think any traction troubles the L might have would be dwarfed by the problems a 460 powered classic stang would have.

69 Mach with a 351w-4v, automatic and 3.25 rear ran 15.0 in the magazines back in the day.

OK. Spool was a bad word. But it does take a second or two to reach max boost.

I would vote for the lightning unless the big block was built just right.

The 460 currently has Manley pushrods, Proform Extruded Aluminum Rockers, Comp Cam 294/304 .589/.615, Edelbrock Victor Jr. Intake Manifold, 750 cfm Edelbrock Carb (will be changed out with a 950cfm carb), MSD Distributor, MSD Blaster 2 Coil, MSD 6AL Ignition Box, Summit Long Tube Headers, BTE Racing auto/manual valve body, B&M Megashifter, B&M 3200 Stall convertor, Hughes Dual Friction Clutch, and a Centerforce Flywheel. It will also very soon have D0VE-C heads ported to SCJ head specs. Would this combo be enough to take a Lightning with those upgrades you mentioned?

I would take on the 460 with those mods.

a 3200 stall converter AND a dual friction clutch.....must make for some interesting shifts. Anyway, the 460 would take the L assuming it didn't spin the whole way down the track.

Just hope the Lighning is stock.. My experience is that most of them ARE NOT!! They are very easy and inexpensive to make very fast.

The Lightning hands down. There is almost no delay in boost, and traction is not difficult to maintain.
