I have a 65 fastback. It is badged as a gt, but does not have the fog lights, so it is probably a fake GT. Can anyone tell me what makes a 65 GT a GT? Also even more puzzeling to me is what makes a 2+2 a 2+2? Some have said a folding back seat, however, didn't all 65 fastbacks have a folding back seat unless it had the seat delete package (Shelby)? Thanks in advance for the info.

2+2 is a europian term describing a 4 seater sports car. All '65-'66 fastbacks were called 2+2's.

A GT will have disc brakes. There is no infalable way to authenticate a GT as there are no numberical identifiers. All of the GT characteristics may be "add ons" by a PO.

Thanks for the info, mine doesn't have disc brakes so as I suspected it isn't a GT. So should it have 2+2 badging?

Yes, as all FB's have them, yours should too. They may have been "deleted" by a PO (prior owner).

You can start with the vin.
IIRC you will not have a 'c' code factory GT car. A GT was either 'a' or 'k' coded. But they could be an 'a' or a 'k' code and not be a GT.

Then it also gets hairy because some dealers could add options on site that would make the car a dealer GT.

Because of the poor state of records from Ford for 65-6 there is no way to 100% verify a car is a gt unless you have complete documation from the original sale that matches the vin to the options etc....

Me personally, I don't worry about it...if you want a GT, put the full GT equipment (or just the stuff you like) on it and drive it around proud.
