Looking at 67 coupe and...

I'm interested in this '67 Coupe on E-bay. The guy is just a couple hours from my house so I'm considering taking a really quick trip to check this ride out.

This is my first classic and I was really interested in a 67 or a 68, with a V8. It doesn't really matter if it's a coupe, fastback, or vert to me. A vert would be nice, but would probably at another $5k-$10k, right?

Could you please check this out and let me know what you think? Does anything look odd to you? What questions would you ask about it. I'm planing on modifying it a bit, but it looks like the perfect starting point to me...a vehicle I can enjoy and drive now that I'll modify as time and money permit.

Finally, what would you pay for this? Should I wait and be patient or is this something I should jump all over?

I guess the key questions are what do you think it's worth if there is no structural problems or rust and what would you ask the seller?

Im surprised its going for what it is at this point $5200?

The thing that really worries me is that they obviously black spray-bombed the entire engine compartment - radiator and everything - only some wires and hoses were removed before hand. Makes you wonder what they are really hiding. Also, I think I see where they cut through the shock towers to grease the upper control arms - I hate it when they are cut like that

I would absolutely look at it in person first. If you are close enough, take the trip!

I like it. But I would definitly go check her out in person. Someone could have just done a backyard paintjob and added some chrome to make it look good for sale, but really it could be a rust bucket underneath. I noticed he didnt include any undercarriage pictures, hmmm. Bring a magnet with you for sure and a flash light.

First off, thanks to both of you. I see what you mean about doing the entire engine bay in black...I'm also looking really closely at the shock towers and am not seeing the holes you talked about, unless you're talking about the two little dots in the front of the passenger side tower. I haven't been around classics long enough to notice things like that. My classic Stang knowledge is growing, but I'm not even close to knowing what I do about my '00 GT.

If I were able to get this for under $9k, would that seam reasonable to you?

I hear what you say...and I'm not really a newbie on this site or other Stang sites, especially late model Mustangs...just to Classic Stangs. I normally would agree with you on the search button and encourage others to use it. I have been searching these classic forums a lot over the past few months trying to learn as much as possible. I was just short on time last night and I knew I wouldn't have much time to search today. Given that the auction was ending very soon, and the possibility of making a trip to go see it, I needed to post the question to save time.

Around 9k is a LOT to pay for any coupe that has potential issues. It would need to be a pretty solid driver for that kind of money. Go look at it first - wouldn't hurt to bring another car buddy with you to help you "keep it real". I would have guessed that car at $5500-$6000 tops.

Well, after having the opportunity to do some research, I've learned some things to look for if I go see it.

I see that a fair amount of thing have been changed from original, but that doesn't bother me because I was going to do something similar. Correct me if I'm wrong in any of this. It has the GT front end, steering wheel, and stripe down the side, but no badging. Also, he said that it has been painted at one point, so the stripe was probably added then. Also, it has a 302, which wasn't offered that year.

One other thing to note...being a "black plate" car only means that it was regisered in Cali before 70, correct?

I'm going to wait until the auction is over and then try to work out a deal...I don't think it is going to meet his reserve. If it does, then oh well. There are plenty of 67-68 coupes out there in good shape to start with.

The door jambs are painted flat black as well. Probably to cover up the original colour because the car wasn't "jambed" when it was painted. They didn't mask off the hardware either.

Holy crap that car looks like mines twin. As far as advice, look inside the wheel wells for rust, see if you can get them to let you drive it if you go and look at it, make sure it starts easily and then idols smoothly.

Thanks folks! I appreciate your advice. I've also "searched" the forums and found a bunch of other good and useful information.

Thankfully, I've decided to slow down in my search for a classic. I need to sell my 2000 GT first. I'll be listing that this weekend. Hopefully, that process won't take too long.

Then, I'll start looking for 67-68 coupes or verts and 69-70 fastbacks or verts. I'm not quite exactly sure what I want, but whenever I look through information about these years and styles, I say to myself that I really want that. The good thing is that there's enough variety there to make shopping fund.

Exactly what I did, slowed down a lot. There are plenty of classic mustangs out there. Just wait and you'll find the right one.
