I have a 67 coupe with a stock 289. Once the snow melts up here in minnesota and i can take her out of storage i have a edelbrock performer intake and edelbrock performer 500cfm carb to install. While I'm doing this I am thinking about upgrading from the stock manifolds to headers. Any recommendations on what kind? long tube? shorty? tri-y? I heard with shortys I wont have any fitment issues. is this true? I dont have power steering so i dont have to worry about going around that. Also I looked at going with hipo manifolds but I think headers are the way to go. Any recommendations would be great.

Ceramic coated TRY-Ys make for a good street header. They build TQ, which, is what you want for cruising and work good with the performance upgrades you mention.

I switched from full-tube headers to 289HP manifolds years ago. Couldn't detect any loss of power, and they are way easier to live with.
Later, I port-matched the exhaust, and did notice an increase in power. Strictly by seat-of-the-pants, I'd say I have more power with porting and manifolds than I had with no porting and headers.

I dont know how you would keep the metal out of your engine if you ported the heads installed.
Its not hard in theory, you just scribe the gasket holes on the head and remove material until you reach the scribe marks.
I think you would be happy with Tri-y or HP manifolds. I have the Tri-Y and like them.
