Been forever since I've had a reason to post here, but I just picked up another mustang to tinker with. I'll have to post some pictures later, but it's a 67 coupe with a 289. Nothing fancy, just a solid rust free car to start with. Had a couple questions on some minor issues...

1. How hard is it to rebuild the power steering ram, and the power steering control valve? It leaks enough that the prior owner just disconnected the pump and ran it without. It is leaking out of the ram itself, but I figured while I have it apart, I might as well rebuild it all. Is it something simple, or should I find a pro?

2. This question could be directly related to the prior one. As I was moving the car today I completely lost steering. The steering wheel moves freely, and thats about it. I won't have time to put it on a lift until sunday and see exactly what is wrong, but I need some ideas as to what parts I should buy prior. The mustang supply stores are closed on the weekends, so I wanted to buy the most probable defective parts to have on hand.

Thanks for any help.

You can rebuild both. Here is a great site to help you with it.

Read over the info on Stangers Site and decide if you want to rebuild it yourself.

THe 67 should have a rag joint between the steering box and the column-it sounds like the rag joint shredded or fell apart. Check with a flashlight.

Happened to me once. My steering box pretty much died, just a few minutes after I got through a trip which maintained 70mph, gave out in a parking garage.

If the rag joint is intact, you've got an expensive problem on your hands there:notnice:

Rebuilding the Control Valve is actually very easy and not time consuming --If you have tools, and Mechanical abilities.

If Mechanically challenged, equipt with a Buffalo tool set, Pair of Pliers, and 5 Screw drivers, It will be a Major Challenge, Maybe impossible.

As for the Steering loss, If Rag Joint (If Equipt with one), is not Broken, then it is either the Box internally, Or the Ball stud has pulled out of the Control valve.

If you are not concerned with concours restoration for this car, you should look into the new Borgeson integral power steering box. It repplaces the stock steering box and allows you to do without the ram and control valve. Much cleaner and less likely to leak. Does not work with the stock Z-bar clutch linkage if you have manual transmission, but otherwise is a nice piece for about $500. Do a search for it on the forum and you will be able to read some info on it.
