lost key

hello i have a question concerning my lost key for a 65 mustang fastback

1) is it easier to hire a locksmith and make a key

2)or to replace the ignition keyhole thing and buy a new key

i need to know if its cheaper and and easier

The ignition keyhole thing (ignition switch) comes with new keys. It will be cheaper to buy new switch than pay a locksmith. He will need to acquire proper blanks anyway.

i just drilled out my neighbors last week for his 66 coupe. I drilled the center of the cylinder to basically hollow it out, being carefull not to damage the housing, then removed the cluster and removed the ignition switch and replaced it. I cant remember why we did the switch, you might have to do a lock SET(both doors and IGN) and switch.

oh the local locksmith wanted minimum 65 bucks to "pick" it and make a key if possible.
the ignition cylinder will only come out if its turned(with a key or picked) to ACC then depress the pin and remove and then a new cylinder can be put it, if not it must be drilled.

A key is needed to properly remove the cylinder. Without a key, you will have to resort to other methods of removal.

Although drilling would be best(as Isky describes), when I am in a hurry I use an autobody slide hammer with a screw attachment. It removes the cylinder, BUT also damages the switch so that the new cylinder won't latch into place.

thats what i should have done, but i HATE when people watch me work on their car, they dont like to see big tools come out.
