the car is a 1997 NPI mustang gt , i was over taking someone and down shifted to 3rd ran it to 5.5k rpm and shifted into 5 and when i was coming out to a turn slowing down , the car started knocking below 2k rpm , the knock goes up slightly with rpm but completely disappear past 2k as if it never happened.

what would cause that? and how can it be fixed

Hopefully it's not a rod bearing but there's a pretty decent chance it is. You'll need to isolate where the noise is coming from (i.e. top, bottom, left right) on the engine to diagnose further.
