I would call it more of a weekend warrior. I drive it every day, but going fast is WAY more important to me than saving gas.
Thanks for all the input everybody, now I just have to decide who to listen too!
and for the confusion, its a C-4 auto, but its getting rebuilt (under warranty from the first time I had this crappy shop rebuild it) right now.

If you have pretty good tires already, a little bit of tire slip is good because it helps get the engine up in the power band rather than bogging. It's just that if you have to feather the throttle a ton to keep the tires from going up in smoke, the other improvements won't help as much.

I hope that is helpful with deciding on the order of things.

Don't worry about the other guys with their talk about the friend's light weight car. Yeah, a lighter car always wins if the other things are close, but you don't want to twist your car up with some crazy huge motor just to beat this guy. Let him put the SBC or whatever in there and then you can smile when his doors quit closing right because the body is a pretzel.

Believe me, the SBC motor is not neccisary to make good power. You can build a junkyard 280z turbo motor for CHEAP that will go FAST. The thing is that you gota know the trickery behind it, if the guy is a scrub then he has no chance against you but if he is a Z nut then I still think you have at best a major bit of competition and at worst you are going to get owned.

No that wont be a problem, cause he inherited the Z from his dad (It was his first car) and his dad is having a hard time letting him even put headers on it, let alone junk turbo it. He wont be able to make it faster, I just want to make sure he knows how much better muscle is than import.

If thats the case, put on a good carb, do some cheap ignition upgrades and spend the rest on traction and the only thing he will see is dust and tail lights =)

This is not to brag, but I had a 1600 push rod Pinto with a four speed, two barrel carb, recurved disttributor, shaved heads, headers and turbo muffler that could outrun an original 240Z. I had all the work done at a speed shop for a very minimal investment.
