I have a '00 GT that makes a low pitch drone type noise only when it's cold outside (below 45 or so). I think I narrowed it down to the intake/air filter area since if I put my hand on it when the noise is present it vibrates. The noise is most common at the initial start in the morning. Once warmed up it goes away, but when driving it will come and go at low RMP's (1500 or so) - goes away as soon as I give it a little blurp of throttle........then it comes back again after a little bit of driving.

Like I said, during the warm/hot months I never hear it.

Any ideas??

RE: Low Drone Intake Noise

I read your thread and I am experiencing the same exact problem with my 98' Mustang GT. I was wondering if you found a fix for your problem and if so what was it.

Thanks for your assistance in advance.

Any mods at all to the intake? Including small stuff like removing the square box in IAC line. How about a K&N filter? CAI?

Any of these mods can sometimes increase the intake noise.

Remember that air does not pass uniformly through the intake. It is actually a series of pulses. These pulses can set up vibrations in the intake (Resonate). The factory stock set up attempts to minimize these vibrations. Which is why some intakes have "chambers" in their design. But it is not always possible to eliminate resonation every time.

If there are any loose parts, missing bolts, or supports, this can cause vibrations.

We have a Lincoln LS 3.0 V6 that drones almost every time it is cold. Is sounds like a big lazy bee under the hood. It goes away just as soon as it warms up.
