They helped out alot in all my past experiences. The only down side is that some make the car alot louder in the back due to the harder bushing in the aftermarket LCA.
I have the Saleen ones on the 94GT and love those a lot. I don't think they make any bad noises or what not. I had some Mac ones on my old car and those were noisey as all get out.
I've also heard the Maximum motorsports are noisey too.
You can get a dual poly bushing LCA if you only care about going straight. That should give you some good 1/4 mile traction, but beware of bind in the turns.

i have lower springs on my car. how hard is it to switch the lower control arms and is there anything that might catch me by surprise during the install?
