Lowering springs/How To

I am interested in lowering my car(05 GT)with a set of Eibach Sportlines. I was wondering if this is something I can do myself. I've already done several bolt-on modifications(cai, cat-back exhaust, catless H-pipe, short throw shifter) and have found them to be relatively painless. What kind of tools would I need?, how long would the process take? Thank You for any info

The rears are easy as hell. The fronts require a spring compressor for diassembly. You will need to get a front end alignment immediately after the install. I suggest a set of replacement adjustable camber bolts so the front end can be aligned within specs.

i have seen people not use a compressor, just put the car on stands,put a jack under the arm,loosen the top nut and lower bolts and slowly lower the jack to release the pressure.(at least thats what i think they I saw them do)

For a matter of a few bucks either buying a pair or renting from your local auto parts store I would use the compressors!!!!! The front springs are under so much more compression than the rears. Yes you can use the jack to lower the control arm, BUT if for some reason the spring decides it wants out now...not worth an injury to save a few bucks. By using the spring compressors the front springs will just harmlessly fall out as the rears do.
When I put the springs in my '00, I even used the compressors on the new springs until I got things back together.

Hope you dont mind scraping your bottom end, because with my Eibach Pros I scrape my bottom braces and pipes. I know the Sportlines lower the car much more. You probably will need some better shocks also as well as caster/ camber plates. Also if you plan to add a front fascia that has low ground clearance, be careful! I have a CDC Aggressive chin spoiler and it gets scraped up daily!

I just lowered my 07 with the prokit on Friday night. I would suggest the spring compressor also. It took me all of 40 minutes to do the fronts. I used air tools which made things super fast.

Rears took me longer because I have the Cervini side exhaust on my car and in order to lower the rear end fully to get the springs out, I had to pull down the exhaust (otherwise the drive shaft hits and won't give full travel).

It's a gravey job. Easily accomplished by the backyard mechanic. Here's a link to a great write up from gp001 a member here...

For those have done this could you not just use the compresser on the rears as well or would that just take longer? I'm planning this in a couple weeks and was thinking it would be easier I have to do both control arms and a pan as well. I'm in a small single garage with no room...fun fun

you dont need to compress the rear springs. there is enough room to slide the springs into place without a need to compress them.

Use the jackstand under the lower control arm/undo the middle strut nut/lower control arm method. It is much safer then spring compressors. On-the-car spring compressors are death traps.
