I doubt it is still true (the LT1/LS1 cars sold better) but in 1991 I remember reading (think it was Car And Driver or some such) that there were more Mustangs registered as drivers (on the road) than all the camaros and firebirds ever made. The Mustang was the Camaros main competition, but the Camaro was never a competitor for the Mustang, at least in the eyes of the brass and using sales figures. The Ford brass saw the Eclipse and its ilk as the "real" competition to the Mustang on the sales lot.
